1st Test Bear Original vs New vs Stock
First, I made "NO" Changes to the to the Fuel or timing! (Side note which I will talk more about later is that the PC3R Timing Map went to Hell and back and had "PLUS & MINUS" 20 degrees of timing) Bergie and 2 of his friends where there. We were in Herndon Virginia the Dyno Operator was Nick Jennett.
First runs looked crazy Up & Down instead of the steady rise on the Graph. We then found out that the timing was changing 40 degrees back and forth. I removed all of the timing and first run was somewhere near 179 to 180. The second run was 181, We then added back a "Little" Timing (1 degree at peak, 2 degrees just below that up to 4 degrees at Idle. To make a long story short, 183.1 HP and 100.4 pound feet of torque! (The Point hp may be a little off because I am trying to remember the exact numbers because his printer was not working correctly!) Bergie will pick up the Graphs and post later. Remember, I have spent close to a year working on this Set of stacks and over 6 months with the pipe . MAX HP on "Original" Bear Stacks was 183.1 and 100.4 pound feet of torque SAE NET. Remember, Stock was 152.6 HP and 90 Pound feet of torque.
My Bike is a 2000 ZX12R without a valve adjustment, Cam degreeing or even intake port to Fuel Injection Boot matching (There is quite a lip there also). I have in order of what I think makes the power, Hindle Step tube exhaust, Power Commander PC3R, Bear Original Stacks, BMC Race Filters and the Falicon Billet Clutch Basket! I used Chevron 93 octane fuel!
I then put in the stock rubber Boots, Which thanks to the long suffering patients of C. Franks (I think it is Charles) I still had to use for this test! Up to 4,000 rpms, a slight "Advantage" in torque and Hp (.1 to .4 of each at most!) Then the Bear "Original" Stacks slowly pulled away from the Stock and made between 2.4 and 3.2 Hp more and about the same amount of peak torque more. MAX Hp stock boots 181.1 & 98 pound feet of torque
I then installed the "New Bear Stacks"! I had 2 sets with me, One with a perfect finish and one that had a bad anodize. Up to about 6,000, the new stacks made about 1 to 2 more HP and Torque, then the Original stacks slowly started to make more torque and Hp. The "DIfference" was "Peak to Peak", about .4 to .6 more Hp and torque for the "Original" over the New Stacks from about 6,000 upward!
Several things not seen here was the fact that I sat next to the computer and noted the Fuel /Air ratio during every run at all of the rpm ranges. The new stacks ran "Richer" than the Original stacks, Which the bike has been tuned for! AFter Daytona, I plan to return with just the New stacks and dial them in as carefully as possible.
My Honest feeling is that the New Bear stacks (as Pierre said) will end up making the "EXACT" same Peak HP and Torque and gain 1 or 2 in HP & Torque between off Idle up to 6,000 rpms when I finish! As I have been telling people all along, the "Original" Stacks are for peak HP and Peak Torque and the Upper end of the rpm range. The New Stacks after tuning will work better up to 6,000 rpms and then there is no difference. There is one other advantage with the new stacks, they are already drilled and tapped for NOS Injectors! I forgot to add that the "NOS" Holes were left OPEN & Un Plugged. Iplan to plug the Holes with Silicone, because I think leaving this hole "Open" Disrupts the Laminar flow of the air!
I am now extremely tired, I had to make "2" trips out to Herndon because when I got the first call, the test was off because the place had 2 to 4 inches of water everywhere on the floor. WHen I got there, the water had been removed and had started drying out, so I went another 80 miles round trip back to my house and picked up my bike and went back! This is not what "Old" people should be doing late on Staurday Night! Maxton will be another story and test!
(Side note, Remember I was stating how much HP my stock bike could make with each modification and I stated that I felt that between 185 and 190 was possible? Well I am up to 183 and have yet to degree my cams or use an Oxygenated fuel! I am told that the Fuel can add as much a 6 Hp and Degreeing the cams can make up to 4 Hp difference! I still say that if I can get 2 or 3 HP from degreeing the cams and 4 or 5 hp more from the Fuel, that 190 HP is still possible! Does anyone now believe that I cannot get to 185) HP "NOW"?? Bergie took real good pictures of a problem area between the FI, Boots and the Head! NicK told us about this area! http://www.dontbescaredracing.com/photos/events/022203
