Freshly built motor not picking up oil

Hello guys, your thoughts on this please, my brother has a fresh built 2002 zx 12 motor, we get it on the bike and as I always do with a fresh motor, I unplug the computer loosen the oil filter, with oil in the bike ofcourse, Im sure someone would say does it have oil in it................lol I crank the motor till oil spews around the oil filter, his engine didnt pick up oil, so we removed the oil pan, all looked good, we put the pan back on still wont pick up, took it a step further, removed the clutch basket, we have a tool that with a drill we can spin the oil pump gear, still wont pick up, removed the oil pump everything looks ok, bike still wont pump Oil, what can be the problem?????? we didnt build the motor, is there something the engine builder could have over looked?

Make sure he put the oilpump gears in
Make sure the relief was installed into the oil galley.
If the pump was installed dry it may have a problem picking up, maybe remove the waterpump and have a look before you do anything else.
At least you haven't tried to run it like some guys would.

Pack some vaseline into the pump cavity, not a whole jar, but enough to seal the gears

remove the hose from the water pump and make sure the water pump is spinning.

That's a good idea. Although he did say they used a primer shaft to spin the pump with the clutch out.

There is also another plug opposite the relief valve, make sure that was reinstalled.

I used white lithium grease on the oil pump rotors.

Make sure you have the right year of oil pump rotor in there. The A model rotor is more narrow and won't prime properly.

also IIRC there is a lil dowel in the end of that barrelwhich fits against the oil pump....

The pump drive shaft has a join that sometimes breaks...

glad it was mentioned that the A models are different than the B models we were just about to take a oil pump out of a 2000 and install it in the 2002, I thought they were the same, thanks again...........

Suzukidude; Just take the large engine breather hose off of the back of the airbox. Then set your air compressor to 30lbs. Turn on the ignition, and the oil light will be on. Pressurize the crankcase with the air and you will see the light go out as the engine is pressurized with oil. Do that 2 or 3 times, and then the next time you do it, once the light goes out start the engine. The zx12 oil pump is terrible about not wanting to prime. This method works great every time. Mike.

someone asked about the primer we used to prime our motor, thats it above pretty simple, the 2 bolts just fit in the holes in the oil pump spin it with a drill, these bolts are bent cause this one fits the busa, had to bend the bolts for it to fit the 12, when I have another one made it will be adjustable..........
