Question for worm~hole
A kid (literally) on bcsportbikes.com is claiming that "lane splitting in Calif is ILLEGAL and only overlooked by cops as they have to let riders ride American air cooled Harleys and they have to keep moving or else they will overheat" He is insisting that lane splitting is against the law there.
He is driving me nuts.
Is there a specific part of the Calif Motor Vehicle Code/ Act or Reg that I can quote or point him to so that he will shut the fuck up about this already? Some sort of a reference # or something?
PS.. how's the new house?

I talked with a group of police oficers in Monterey last summer. Lane splitting is totally legal, but after that opinions on what you could and could not do, and how fast etc. they all had their own opinions. Also it is not lane splitting that is legal it is lane sharing!

I found this using a Google Search:
Many motorcyclists, new to California, have asked me about "lane splitting". One day I thought I should know in black and white (as in per the law) what the deal in this state really is. It turned out to be a tough one. I read everything I could. Here's what I found.
You see, there is no "lane splitting" law. The deal is there is no law prohibiting a vehicle from sharing a lane with another traveling in the same direction. In a free country, if there is no law prohibiting something then you can do it. Therefore you can lane split or share.
The best representative piece of law I could find is below. As you can read there is nothing prohibiting splitting. Be aware that such parts of the law as "...entirely within a single lane..." have been used by law officers to ticket motorcyclists splitting with their handlebars (or some other bike component) partly in each lane.
21658. Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, the following rules apply:
(a) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.
(b) Official signs may be erected directing slow-moving traffic to use a designated lane or allocating specified lanes to traffic moving in the same direction, and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of the traffic device.

...yeah, what zone said...if there is no law prohibiting it, then it is legal to do so..however, if you split a lane in an dangerous manner ie. excessive speed, wheelying, stoppies, or anything else that could be deemed unsafe by the observing officer or concerned citizen, an asshole hoolligan biker could still be subject to a citation for either wreckless driving, unsafe conditions, etc. ...remember, just because it says 70MPH it doesn't mean you can drive 70MPH when its pouring rain, foggy, etc. ..it would fall under "speed unsafe for conditions...that being said, if I EVER catch an asshole hooliganistic biker splitting lanes at 70MPH while traffic is bumper to bumper at 20MPH, the rider gets a coupon (that is if I can even catch the rider HA!)...you go tell numbnuts on bcs to shut the fuck up already, he doesn't know what he's talking about...
..the house move has been an excruciatingly long process...trying to work with a cold, trying to move in the rain, trying to clean up the rental...AND my white Coprice's transmission went south at 108,000 miles..$2500 for a performance rebuild...billet servos, hardened shafts, better steels and clutches, 2400~2500RPM stall converter...I'll be handing yer' ass to you when I come up to race your Taliban Taxi...and I haven't been able to set up my computer at the new house yet (I'm on my lunch break at work)...and no T.V. at the house, either!...Laguna can't arrive soon enough for me

I don't make any claims of being a Chevy expert, but (you knew there had to be a but!! ) Wasn't a 406 a Ford motor?
