Pics of Clutch Work & Possible Defect!
A friend called and stated that he just pulled the clutch out of a friends ZX12R and stated that the Spring washer that holds the Hub in place was small in diameter and was not much larger in diameter than the splines on the aluminum Hub. He felt that this caused the Hub to wobble and may have been the cause of some basket problems. I forgot to ask if the bike was and "02" or newer. Hopefully, this was just a mistake on his bike, but you may want to take a look at yours. The spring washer should come within a 1/4" of the machined inside edge of the hub. I also wanted to show my expensive and special Clutch Basket tool! The "Rounded end Punch" I use. With it, I do not need the bolts to pull out the bearing sleeve either! Here goes

[

As you can see, I will be calling Muzzys Monday (For a their better than stock Clutch) and shipping the Basket to Falicon. Another $600 gone to Hell!

Serious question, The very last (read inside) steel plate and really bent. It was not easy to get it out, Personally I blame the 2 little rings at the back, one flat and one curved outward. The sit under the the friction plate that has room near the center. Anyone else experience this?

It was to look for a smaller washer than needed. The washer behind the nut was the correct size. There was nothing wrong with the Hub or basket. Just beat to hell Plates!

Doug, A new friend called me and said that he had just taken a friends ZX12R clutch Apart. He stated that the Clutch "HUB" was loose. In fact it wobbled. When he removed the retaining nut he found that the Washer behing the nut was no more than 3/16" to 1/4" wide. He further stated that the washer barely covered the splines on the Clutch Hub and that this area had been crushed by the small washer which caused the Hub to wobble and then (He Felt) contribute to the breaking of the Basket!
Knowing that this washer is normally about 1/2" wide and is a Spring washer, I decided to recheck mine even though I was 99% certain that I had the "Large" Normal spring washer. I partly posted the pictures to show what the washer and nut assembly "SHOULD" Look Like. Of course there are the burnt steel plates from Maxton and having a stock Basket and short arm did not help to get the 250 plus the Bike moving!
BTW, I ordered the clutch up grade from Muzzy Sunday Night and sent my Basket to Falicon Monday. There was Oil in the Hub and Basket (I drilled my Basket and Bearing Sleeve like you guys did), but I think i will also flatten one side of the "Puller Shaft" also. I do not want too much Oil because of Drag / Windage, but a little more cooling Oil should help. Understand now?
I am going to get him to send me a Picture of this washer. That is why I said "Possible Factory Defect" in the post, because if your washer is that small, then the Factory made a mistake.

I have a "Stock Clutch" as it came from the factory in 2000. I drilled the Hole in the Basket sleeve and then drilled and fluted the hub myself, which was "perfect" for the street. (A little more cooling Oil). Now that I have gotten a "Little" more serious, I need the full Kit. Thicker Plates and some heavier springs.
For People with a "Stock" 2000 ZX12R Kawasaki clutch in their bike, the Muzzys Clutch is an "Upgrade". Would you not agree?

Talking and "Communicating"! I have just talked with the person that "Alerted" me to the Clutch Hub problem and found out what Happened. It is "Good" news in a way.
The Bike is a 2000 ZX12R with over 40,000 miles. It is geared very Short (16 front) and used to its full potential. Yes the Clutch Hub wobbled, but it was not from a too small washer being used.
The Aluminum Hub finally separated from the Thermo Bonded Steel center. I am actually glad to see that this part will hold up that long.
