I have seen some serious racing with snowmobiles. Especially in Alaska. And the speed is extremely high for the conditions and they can get real unstable! I crashed one about 15 years ago as I went through the traps at just over 145. It was a nasty head banger of a crash. Snowmobile racers have my respect.

I saw a exhibition of dragrace snowmobiles in the springtime once.
Those things were going 9.50s or so unsorted. One guy said they were even quicker in the snow!

HDL is correct, can you say holeshot? Either you get it right or you miss every shift. It's all in the clutching, weights, ramps helix angles all must match the torque curve of the motor. Then you got the weight transfer on the rear suspension. Tricky at best. One of my buds consistently beats much larger sleds because he is good at clutching. I will try to get some pics up sometime this winter. And yes they are much faster on snow/ice.
I am smitten with the new Yam RX-1, R-1 motor in a sled. The Redline is a sweet unit also.

In Snohomish, WA they have some grass fields that they run snow machine drags on/ That looks pretty fun too.
