Would you buy a used sport bike?
In years past, I had no problems buying used bikes. Nowadays, after seeing the way some of the kids treat their bikes, I'm very apprehensive about buying one.
I was thinking of going to a local dealer and trading in my RC51 on something like a slightly used ZX-9 ZX-12 etc and also picking up a cheap KLR650. The KLR, I wouldn't have 2nd thoughts about buying used but the others, er..........

If your buying a used sport Bike you need to go over it with an extremely critical eye. Judgements on thigs like an old guy owned it doesn't work! And these things don't crash well these days. Even new parts won't change the steering head angle after it has been bent! And as a rule the bad ones are usually traded off to the dealer. And it is no wonder dealers offer crap for trade in!

Buying Used is a little scary as you noted. Granted these bikes aren't what your dad used to ride, but tearing into the tranny, clutch and other abused parts is no small task. Unless you do alot of the work yourself, shop rates will eat holes in your pockets.

no i wouldnt ever consider buying a used bike
everyone thinks themselves a racer & a stunter
i know at least 3 doz dealers & at least 1/2 that many custom shops
the # & type of repairs have NO correlation to the quality
of the build & the technology available in todays sporrt machines
ridden within that scope
which far exceeds most riders expertise
the damage done would be insignificant
the RC51 is an excellent example
of a fine machine capable of exceeding 100k miles
great handling...... excellent engine
doesnt deliver the in yo face thrash talkin adenaline/testosterone laden
profile that would make it a big seller
you might find a real cherry
at a real good price.............would be a great deal
livin with a natl dragstip in my back yard
with a 1/2 doz more within a 2 hours
low mileage bike dont represent all the drag runs (hundreds)
& the times it was bounced off the rev limiter (hundreds)
good luck

Uh, Id definitely buy a used sportbike, but Id have to talk with the owner and look at the bike.
I see guys selling bikes for kings ransom all the time, mostly because they cant afford the insurance payment or maintenance.
If I had the space there would be lots more bikes in my garage! So many good deals out to be had right now!
And as a general rule of thumb, buying from the "old" guy is often better than buying from the kid.
One hard and fast rule I have is looking at the sellers house/other personal possesions.
If the seller has a garage full of toys and a nice house, chances are he has the money to maintain his/her machines. THe poor seller has an overgrown yard and 4 Camaros on blocks all in various stages of disrepair.
I NEVER BUY FROM THE POOR SELLER.
Dealers get the bottom of the barrel. I heard one say yesterday that "mods are for yourself, not to sell to others". Amused by this statement I asked why all the new sportbikes on the showroom floor had "additional" accessories installed, like pipes, 2nd look seats, flushmount blinkers, etc.
The salesdweeb couldnt think of anything to say.
BTW, I laughed at the 959 with Erion pipe, power commander, and flush mount turnsignals was a whooping $1800 over the MSRP. A cute little caption on the sales sticker read:
-pipe $950
-powercommander $379
-blinkers $30
-Installation $535

Mine has too many miles on it (39K+), but it does still have the ORIGINAL clutch fibers and steels (who needs a clutch anyway?). Of course, all of that will be moot when ever I get a new insturment cluster.
All kidding aside (was I kidding?)... I'd buy one IF I knew the owner and there was at least a year left on the extended warranty.

oh and to answer the question, the only way I would buy a used bike is if it were from someone that I knew,so I knew how the bike was taken care of and maintained.......

I bought a used bike...from an older guy. Two years old with 1137 miles. Pussy strips inches wide. Still had the "tits" right off of center of tread. Clean as a pin. Guy had three or four other bikes. I let him take the hit and I got a "new" bike for a used price!!
