All dressed up, nowhere to go...
So, I got the slick and the wheelie bars mounted on the bike. Unfortunately, the rain kept me off the track today. It even looks like the 'Hangover Drags' at Sears Point are going to be rained out as well. All my buddies are blaming me. They say that I'm the reason it's raining. They all can't play because I got new stuff.
Well, here's a couple of pics.
By the way, ZHooligan scared me, but the strut really wasn't all that hard to install. It really didn't take any longer to install the strut than it did to swap holes on the lowering links.

worm, it's just a clear stocker that I got from Lockhart. It's the FSD undertail that makes everything look really cool. Here's a better shot of the tail light/undertail.

Did you lower the front end since you used the lowering links?

Yeah is the slick taller than the original tire? If so it will mess with your gear ratio. With the taller tire it will probably want to bog off the line even revving the hell out of it and just dropping the clutch. You will probably have to gear the hell out out of it to compensate for the taller tire.

Beans: Yes, I have a strap to lower the front end.
Dave: Yup, you're right. The hugger wasn't made for a square tire, unfortunately. Now I gotta look for a chainguard. Stupid me threw away my stock one when I put the hugger on.
Mike: Thanks, I hope I don't scare myself too bad. As for the sprocket, good eyes. The spare wheel I got on eBay came off of an '00 model. It's got a 44 sprocket on it. I've got a 46 coming along with a 17 for the front.
ZXlnt: The slick is the same OD as the stocker. But, I will definitely have to change my launch technique. Right now, I'm just guessing, but I'm gonna try 9000 rpm then just dump the clutch. With the 17/46, I'm guessing 4th gear when I cross the line.

Wannabe - When I had the slick and bars mounted, I would drop the clutch at 9000+ with no problems. Be prepared for a HARD launch! Don't even think about trying it with a stock tire, or you'll be all over the pad spinning. The slick takes a lil different prep than your stock tire when doing the burnout. Dip it, get it a little bit wet, then get out of the water before starting the burnout. The slick will have little to no traction when wet, so it's pretty easy to get it started. Keep the rpms up and don't worry about seeing smoke. When the tire gets hot, the liquid rubber will lay down on the track, and at the same time, you'll hear an awful screech like peeling the skin off of a live cat, and the bike will hook up and launch forward. Just roll up to prestage. If you have someone to clean the tire as you roll forward, that's great. Otherwise, don't worry bout it. My best results were launching at 9500rpm. That's with a 48tooth gear, and the fucker would still bog, so you definately want to look at going to something pretty short for gearing.

Beans, sorry, but the outside shot was taken in the summer. It doesn't look like that now.
SWFT, thanks for the advice. So, you're saying that I should go with a 17/48 (2.82) gear ratio to keep from bogging down? I was thinking about 16/46 (2.87) so I don't have to swap chains. Also, thanks for the warning about the extra hard launch. It totally didn't connect in my head that I should hold on tighter at the line. Ooh, that could have been ugly...

I didn't find the launch all that hard or violent. What you do need to be prepared for is the shift from first gear to second. With the bars, the slick and lock up clutch first gear is over before you have time to pick your feet up! Especially if the launch area is like our local track. I have a helluva time getting my feet unstuck from the VHT!

Wannabe - I was bogging with the 17/48. Now, as a charter member of TFA (Team Fat Ass) part of that had to be my 225 lbs. Dunno how much you weigh, might not bog with the 16/46. I know I have a 50t sprocket ready to go for next year.

ZHooligan - Yup, at Sears Point & Sac they throw that VHT everywhere. The last test & tune session, I almost lost a boot at the line. But, VHT is good. VHT is my friend.
SWFT - At 230lbs, I am a proud member of Team Fat Ass. I'm gonna go searching for a local shop with a 16T in stock. I'd like to have it for Wednesday's race. I hope I get lucky...

Wannabe:
1. you have any engine mods? If so, what hp?
2. you have a button shifter & shift light?
3. what gear do you wanna cross the line in?
TeamFatAss advice (as noted by swft & ZH) is to go as agressive as you can with gearing IF you have a button shifter; if you are foot shifting the 1-2 shift is problematic (comes REAL fast) with very agressive gears.
I crossed the line too close to RL in 5th with 17/50 (155-ish), so I went to a 17/49.
Depending upon yr projected terminal mph, I'd be tempted to 17/51 or 16/48

I agree with Entropy.A friend of mine with a piped stock found 17/51 was the best setup.9.20@140mph.He weighs about 160lbs and uses the rev limiter to launch or he still bogs.

Entropy & Cowboy,
Thanks for the gearing advice. It's a bit late for me to get those sprockets by Wednesday, but I'm definitely going to try something in there. the 16/48 sounds cool....plus it should fit with the stock chain.
The only engine mod I have is the PCIIIr & Acro full system. No really huge performance gain over stock. No button shifting either. It's all foot shifting right now. The shift light is the next mod on the list.
I'm gonna have to practice getting my foot in to shift right away after the launch. I may have to go to reverse shifting to make it a bit easier. We'll see. It's all up in the air right now.
By the way, I see some people doing it, but do you guys know of anything wrong with launching with your left foor already on the peg?
