Top Speed Governor - When?
Okay, so we all know the story, right? The Hayabusa came out in 1999 and then Kawasaki dropped the ZX-12R in 2000. The Europeans found out how fast these things were and brought an end to the top speed wars.
Q: Exactly when did Kawasaki start snipping the huge hairy ones from the ZX-12R? The common belief is it all started fresh with the 2001 production year but I've heard a few late 2000 models may have had their wings clipped too. Is there any way to tell (short of running my 12 to the top) whether or not my 2000 ZX-12R is snipped? Maybe some sort of VIN coding? Thanks.

Wow my favorite subject. In my view and from the letter I received from Keith Parnell the zx12r was clipped in January of 2000. The ecu data provided by Ridge Racer shows an increased rev limi in the ram air compensation map to 12,350. Ignition timing and fuel maps are not optimal as Ridge Racer discovered after hacking the ecu. If you want more send me a pm

If you aren't going to run it to the top...what does it matter?

Stock Y2K 12R power curve starts to fall off right around 10,500 rpm. "Just" enough power at 10,500 to "keep even with" the EyeAbusa. BUMMER.
Uncork the exhaust and fine tune it. The engine will make 25 more H.P. at 11,500 than stock. DONE.

At LEAST 25 more horsepower if not more...

99-00 busa doesnt have cat in their exhaust,as for zx12r that depends on countries/batch.
Thats the resonss why we have differents results in busa vs zx12r shoot out.

Wow, January 2000. That's crazy. Every now and then we do run the bikes flat out through 6th gear. It's definitely not unheard of with me and my buddies. Doesn't happen often - but does happen.

out of curiosity has anyone taken the clocks (speedo)apart to see if there is plate that moves with the needle to pass through a detector this was normally done with the 400's its cheapest way of restricting speed ?????????????

the speedo was not the method of restriction. it was done via the speed sensor signal to the ecu. it can be derestricted via the bonniville box. the bonniville box will split the signal with one being unmodified sent to the speedo while teh other was modified to "trick" the computer into thinking the bike was going slower than it really was.
is this the best method ?? dunno

Yeah, I heard of the Bonneville Box. It was Kawasaki's T.R.E., or something like that.

Bonneville Box is not needed on a 2000 model ZX12R.
No restriction. 2000 models received a more restirctive canister and a bit of tune in the ECU (High RPM).
