nasty stutter/surge,help

Above 3k r.p.m's my bike is great.i know alot of 00-01 12's run a little nasty down low,but i have rode enough other ones to know i have some other problem i cant disect.of all the 12's i rode there is a slight hesitation maybe from 1-3k.rpm's.mine is real bad both hesitating and surging.most friends guessed map.i went down my road today and put her in 1st,eased out the clutch and gave it no gas.i was doing gps'd 8.8 m.p.h in 1st gear.most bikes would just idle along here, but mine bucked REAL bad back and forth surging.and of course riding anything below 3k and gearing down it bucks.anybody reccomend adding fuel or leaning?or what else?basically i figured i need change below 40% throttle position and below 3k r.p.m's.i unplugged the p.c and it still does it.any ideas where exactly and how much fuel to add or subtract.

mine did that too after i added the exhaust, but once I played with the map, it got better....still not as smooth as it was stock, but goodenough. I am going to take it to a shop and have a custom map made once I get the mods done to it...hopefully that will work it out

I had that problem a couple of times. First it was the Power Cpmmander taking a dump and then it was a matter of mapping. I loaded up the latest map from Muzzy and cleaned things up at the bottom. I tinkered with the mid and upper range of the map but left the bottom end alone and no stutter. And frankly the TiForce exhaust makes the bike runn fantastic even at the bottom, I can run in 6th gear at 30 and roll the throttle on and she just pulls with out a sputter.

I would start by checking out the latest maps from Muzzy.

I had one guy here that was ready to sell his 02 12R because of how it ran down low (no joke)...I did a complete custom map for him and now??? he says he's gonna sell his 02 Busa and buy another 12 (NO JOKE!!!)
Oh ya...the 12 he was gonna sell is now the 210+HP 1361 I posted about
(It was stock w/Muzzy pipe when he hated how it ran down low...before I mapped it)...
He LOVES how it runs as a 1361 since I mapped it also...

Long story short...NOTHING beats having a custom map done on YOUR BIKE by someone that knows what they are doing...

Essentially I'm in the same boat. My 210 hp 1361 idles, and runs smooth as butter with our map and all of my mods. They will run nice you just have to take the time to set them up. A custom map (I am a dyno owner) is cheap when you consider what is done and the results.

Hey Kevin, you mapped mine back in June and never got the low end sorted even after 7 hrs. You were gonna find a map you did that fixed the lowend and send it to me. I have sent you several emails about this with no response. Did you get my emails??

Thanks

Mach; Have you addressed your Air Screws on the Throttle Bodies?

I would make shure to get those adjusted BEFORE mapping. Most 12's w/ pipes like to have the scews 2 turns out to start w/!!

I have seen alot of 12's w/ the screws closed or only a 1/4 to 1/2 turn out and no four are at the same adj.

This adj. will allow your throttle response to be SMOOOOTH right off the bottom.

MANTIS!!!

I'm sorry I didn't answer your E-mail...I haven't been on-line at home for a long time...

PLEASE BRING YOUR BIKE BACK TO THE SHOP!!!!!!!!!!
We found out (a couple of bikes after your ordeal) that we had a bad pump (A/F ratio) on the dyno
That's why it took so long...AND why your bike wasn't right when it left...please forgive the delay in response time...I never did forget about you or your bike...
Bring the bike back and we will re-map it (no charge...obviously)...
I don't want to "send you a map" because...every bike realy does need it's own map...
Call and tell whoever answers the phone to make you an apointment to re-map you...I already OK-ed it with Ryan...

Sorry again for leaving you out there for this long...I've been VERY busy here...spending MANY extra hours at the shop trying to get everything done...

psyco:are you talking about the screws that have the safety metal cover on them you have to drill/tap out? not the ones that get turned to sync the tb's right?the hidden ones were turned ou 3/4 of a turn on mine(as is on all bikes i have seen).basically my budddy sync the tb's so all 4 were even on the merc.tubes.than he said since i had a pipe the screws he had to turn(the ones he tapped out with the cover)needed to be turned in a half a turn.so as of now they are out 1/4 turn as to 3/4 turn from the factory.i had addressed this issue before with a buddy of mine and he said that he kept his on the stock 3/4 turn out because he tried going out 1 than 1.1/4 -2.he said he left them at 3/4 because his a/f meter was showing too rich with them turned anymore than the factory 3/4.
i dont think thats my problem(maybe they need to be back at 3/4 because when they were at 3/4 the bike still did it,thats why we put them 1/2 turn in.
i'm just really stuck here on options.most of my friends with z's dont even mess with those screws, they keep them at the factory 3/4 and they dont have the surge problem,i'm sure cuz i can see the safety cover is still on top of the screws where they could not have turned them in.so maybe i should set em back to the factory 3/4 and try and play with a map vince is going to send me????????????????????

I am talking about the "Airbleed" screws in the TB's. I have not come across a set that were ALL 3/4 out (some even come from the factory CLOSED!). Turning these out will NOT richen the idle mixture. It will help w/ the off idle transition.

mantis...
It should take about 2-hours (for the complete map) that includes the time I spend off of the tunning link to smooth out the low end...

Hell get harry and dave to show and we can have lunch while ya 'll map it, then we can go ride for a bit.....whats something like that run so I can start putting away for it. I dont know if it matters but i run a PCII, I am stupid when it comes to that stuff....just if ya can give me a general figure so I can plan it....the g/f has everything planned for months..so I have to giver her some notice....lol

Kcadby and ZH couldn't say it any stronger CUSTOM map is where it's at!! I couldn't believe the difference when I got my bike mapped.!! I had balked about spending that much $$$ just to have someone map my bike. Shoot, I just "thought" it was a lot of money. Believe me, best money I ever spent was that mapping session. Idles and accelerates BETTER than stock. One thing most peiple need to understand is every bike is different. Of course, with a lot of patience you could improve it enought to ride around. Custom map made by an experienced operator will yield the best driveablity/hp/satisfaction all in a few hours.......

We get $200 for a full-map...that includes me fiddling with the low-speed manualy...AND putting the Carb-Stix on the throttle bodies...

HDL???
Are you sure you have a PCII???
Is it a early model BUSA???
We get $300 for PC2s becuase the Tunning Link won't work on PCIIs so...I have to map them manually...

Well I got the bike remapped yesterday. Kevin Cadby was able to smooth out my problem quite a bit - it really runs much better and I really want to thank him and the owner for remapping my bike for free. Kevin spent about 4 hrs working on it and also adjusted the throttle bodies. He says my bike has been the worse he has tuned in the 5-6.5K range - It still is like an on/off switch in that range but quite a bit better. The 2-3K range is MUCH better. My numbers ended up being 175.4 and 99.4. I have the pre stepped Hindle and PC3. If anyone in the Jax area needs a first class mechanic to work on their bike, Kevin is the man. He's very careful about removing parts so as not to scratch anything and truly knows what he is doing.

Thank you VERY much Mantis
Makes me feel GOOD when I get good feedback

If/When I figure out how to help your "on-off throttle response"...
I will be SURE to let YOU know
Your bike realy is extra bad in that range for some? reason???
