ZX won't start - could the TPS cause this?

Hi all,

I've had my ZX-12R for about 4 months now, it's an 03 plate B2H and up till recently I've had no problems with it. I recently picked up a Scottoiler for it, and fitted that about a fortnight ago, during which I removed the TPS sensor so that I could get better access to the vacuum feeds of the top of the engine.

Fitted it all back together, everything worked...but then couple of days later noticed that after starting, opening the throttle (whilst still in neutral) and revving it, when the revs dropped away, the engine would just stall. I did manage to get it out by leaving it idling for a while and it seemed to be running OK. On Friday however, went in to start it and it won't catch.

Symptoms are that the start motor is turning OK, but no ignition...it did catch at one point but was running very rough and couldn't keep the idle RPM above 1000RPM as it should. Tried it again yesterday and today and same thing - starter turning no probs, no ignition. Figuring that it might be a battery issue - charged that overnight so that it's fully charged.

As I removed the TPS - is it possible that putting that back without recalibrating it could be causing the problem?

I have got a copy of the manual, but (I'm a tit) didn't read the big warning notice about NOT removing the TPS....

Anyone got any thoughts before I have to phone up the dealer and get them to pick it up?

Cheers

I would double check any lines that you had off first, and see if there is paint makings on the tps screws that may not be ligned up any more
is the fi light coming on?
have you pulled the plugs to see if they are wet?

Hi there KZScott, thanks for the response. I've double checked the lines, the only one that I had to remove was the vacuum line off the leftmost cylinder top end, in order to put a tee in it for the Scottoiler vacuum feed. That seems secure enough.

The FI light isn't coming on, but I do notice that when trying to start it, getting a strong whiff of petrol - could that mean that it's flooding due to the TPS being calibrated incorrectly? The bikes also got a PCIII fitted, so not sure - does that make it more sensitive to any miscalibration of the fuelling components?

I'm not particularly mechanically minded, so excuse my rather crappy explanations....

Cheers

Just pluggin off the TPS and putting it back won't affect the calibration... Firts remove PC and check the TPS voltage - should be 1.084-1.086V @ 1000RPM or at least near that. It that cures it go and change Your oils... They probably have fuel in there.
