YCIS,

Does the sensor just give you tuning ability? Does this mean you no longer have to take it to a dyno with a sniffer to get it tuned?

The wideband helps with "real" world tuning. Using the dyno, typically the operator has some guesstimating to do, especially with ram air when setting the A/F curve. The Wideband gives you more accurate tune for the current conditions.
A good air day might require more fuel, a more humid day might not.
The unit YCIS is nice, but expensive. The Halmeter has been used by 1000s of vehicles and does a good job for under $200.
Either one requires the welding of an 18mm fitting in the exhaust to accomodate the lamda sensor. Guys with Titanium systems would have a tougher time finding someone who can weld the fitting in. Stainless could be done at any muffler shop.

Well..yes and no Jse

It gives you an instant readout of your current A/F ratio while you are driving...but as I found out tonight..its quite difficult to pay attention to not only the tach...but the readout on the display at the same time. Its manageable..but difficult.

The system does incorporate a port for data logging...however I dont have the foggiest idea on how to get a laptop to mount somewhere on the bike to record the data. I guess I could put it on the tank..but that would be somewhat annoying. One thing I did was get into 4th gear and hold the bike at certain RPMs to get a good reading on what the A/F was at those speeds. I did this through most of the 4k to 6k rpm range to see what my A/F was at my crusing speeds. Its amazing to see what the differences are even at only 100rpm increments.

For example. In 6th gear at 5000rpm the A/F was reading 11.0:1 (insanely rich for cruising at 70mph) but bump it up to 5200rpm and the af goes to 13.8:1 (perfect for cruising).

Now to go look at my map for that RPM range and see what the PC3 is doing to the fuel delivery.

Anywhoo....I went out to the interstate to play with the new pill and test out the wideband.

OH MY GOD ive never felt anything like this...then again..I think I said that when I put in the 34 jet...and again with the 40 jet...hehehehehe

The bike just SCREAMS when you hit the button...its a much more violent hit now than it was with the smaller jets...but still SOOO smooth.

According to the wideband...my A/F ratio never got above 12.5:1 during my entire 4th gear pull on the road. did it 3 or 4 times just to make sure.

Cant wait to get it on a dyno now

It is the same as the AF meter I have in my car. lights that jump back and forth and used the same way.

I would buy a 4 foot cable and pop the laptop in a backpack. I have a datalogger in my car and I can get A/F there as well as knock and a host of other stuff.

Can you go WOT on the spray in third gear?

heh..no

The A/F sensor you have in your car is a narrowband...and really worthless when it comes to tuning. All it can tell you is that you are above or below 14.7:1...it cannot differentiate between 25.0:1 or 14.8:1...it just shows you above or below (the lights just make you think its more accurate than it is)

Didnt try to go wot in 3rd yet....just doing 4th gear pulls to check where I stood on the a/f before I started to seriously beat on it

I must say, this whole going fast thing is getting rather complicated and somewhat expensive but, far be it for me to drop out before the job is done.
How necessary is the wideband sensor? Can I still get the nitrous kit and just have my local guy tune it for me? Will it still run good at WOT with or without the spray? Do I have to change the timing and fuel ratios to the point that performance suffers when not on the spray at WOT? My next round of mod will be clutch, front forks, rear shock and spray. I am thinking a really bottle under the seat and I don't see myself using it all that often. (famous last words...)

Its not a requirement....Im simply friends with the local FJO wideband dealer here in town and borrowed one of his setups for temporary use (have to get it back soon).

I was just interested in seeing the difference between the wideband sensor readings in a closed dyno room...and what the readings are at speed on the street.

Before this..the only way to read A/F accurately was to go to someone with a dyno and a sniffer (another word for wideband 02 sensor) and make a few runs.

I already have a custom map made for the bike for driveability....and I only spray during WOT...so all my "mods" have been done to effect WOT only. For examply I run MAJORLY rich in the 100% throttle column...but dont change anything below that (no impact on driveability)....I put the colder plugs in...and sofar...the bike runs great. I also have the schnitz timing retard box thats only activated when you press the button to activate the nitrous...again no impact on driveability.

I also didnt want to screw up my bike for everyday riding but make it a beast when I wanted it Hopefully Ive accomplished that.

Well...went to the dyno today and Im disappointed.

225hp 138tq

Very small gains compared to what I was expecting.

Motor was also down due to being rich...only 165hp

A/F was in the 10:1 range on motor...and right around 12.7/13.0:1 on spray.

One possibility is that the bottle was nearly empty...when I got home and weighed it..it only had .4oz of nitrous in it. Ill fiddle with some stuff and go back with a full bottle next weekend.

On a sidenote...that wideband 02 sensor was dead balls accurate as compared to the sniffer on kevins dyno. I was impressed!

Ok...ive decided that the significant timing retard is the cause of my lack of power gains.

Set at -10 degrees using the schnitz box might be a bit much..so im goign to try -5.

By the way...Kevin..can you email me a soft copy of that dyno run with the a/f printout on it? The one you printed out to me didnt have A/f on it.

Thanks man!

Have your dyno tuner run the bike in top gear to allow the sniffer "more time" to analize the a/f ratio.

BTW...Nice work and THX for the GOOD info!

Well..im pretty damn sure it was the timing that was the source of the lack of power.

I had the Schnitz Timing retard box set at -10deg (mechanical advancer set +2.5)

I tried -7 tonight (and a full bottle) and what a difference. started at around 60mph in 3rd....rolled into it and tagged the button..instant wheelie...let off the spray....shifted to 4th...and a perfect power wheelie...oh my god this is so addicting

I was hitting 10k in 6th before I could even blink and finally let off.

Holy smokes I cant wait to get to the track friday!!

You can't say you are getting 75 HP increase if your base run is tuned for NOS. Thats like saying my motor made 50 more HP with 4 spark plugs hooked up instead of 3! What was your best HP with a no-NOS map? 176-200 hp. If I use a NOS map with no NOS it gets 158 HP because it is so rich. That does not mean I am spraying over 110 HP!
