bigju, my insurance isn't bad it is 10 times cheaper on the bike than what it is for my car. I can gurantee every single person on this board has done something or wore something ( or not wore) that someone on this board would call them a Squid for. to tell you the truth I am getting quite sick of hearing the Squid word come up.

i have to say , that I and most of the guys I have ridden with, and they range from 20 to 50. Have on occasion done some pretty squidly things....I try to pay attention to whats going on around me..I am not gonna go 120 through a residential area....or ride a wheelie through the middle of town...but I will go out on the back roads and practice my wheelies where there are no houses, and not many cars....and as far as starting out as a squid.....I never had a big that would do anything squidly.....my first street bike was a 75 CB750 honda that a paid 100 dollars for, in 1986.. and then I had a old KZ900 that was a POS....and then I rode my dads 58 Sporty for a while, then had a 93 600 Kanatuna....and most recently Kelly and I had the 01 EX500 that she started out on....and the 01ZX6R, and now the hoss of all motorcycles...the 02 12........I guess the only thinkg left for me to do is buy my buddies 84 GS1100 drag bike.........lol but as you can see untill I got the 6R I never had a bike that I could wheelie, well atleast not well.....and stoppies were out of the question, they are however fun on the 6R..heheheheh

I say posers...Everyone has some squid in them...

Like TedG said, Squids learn to ride good or excellent...I have seen posers in Vanson leathers on a 1000 follow a squid on a 600 and almost went off the road in a curve!!!

Look at all the Squids making the Freestyle stunt videos, those boys have skills!!!

When I read the topic of this thread I thought "posers are worse by far" but getting more into it I realize that squids are worse because they are what most non-riding people think we ALL are.

My mother and my wife think that motorcycles are death traps. I've had several discussions with my wife about this and I've shown her how bikes are better at accelerating, decelerating and manuevering than cars so they are better equiped to avoid accidents. It doesn't matter. Why? Because all summer long guys on old CBR900RRs, Yamaha R1s and GSX-R750s go FLYING by on the highway at well over 100 mph. Most of these riders have never had any kind of formal training with regards to motorcycling and a lot of them have been riding for less than a year.

It all adds up to perception. If you see a guy sitting on the side of the road in full leathers with nice, shiny knee pads, he's probably going to spend more time off the road than on it. If you see someone riding down the highway in a full wheelie with their feet hanging over the windscreen and absolutely no riding gear, you know they've spent a lot of hours on the bike trying to master that kind of crap and their probably going to spend even more time working on the next crazy stunt. This is the threat, or at least the perceived threat.

hey my knee pads were virgin until october track day....

though something interesting, why is it no matter how fast someone is going when they are speeding, people always say "he was going at least 100 mph!!" even if he passed them sedately....

A poser will NOT follow a sqid anywhere - as a poser wouldn't even think of going fast on a road. Hell, that would mean he might get his bike DIRTY or put down his latte.

Squids may or may not be skilled - but they give all of us sportbikers a bad name. I have a squid streak in me, but I really try to contain it to country roads and the race track.

I know guys that are classic squids: shorts, tennis shoes, running 120 down the freeway. One guys had a good amount of skills - he could sit on his gas tank and do wheelies -until his luck ran out.

He was doing is normal thing - not wearing any gear etc. Pulled a wheelie on the freeway and set it down at 130mph. Got into a tankslapper and bailed off. Lost 70% of his skin.

That, my boys, skills or no skills, is a squid.

Bottom line for squids: they can be a danger to other people (wheelies right beside you etc.) with no regard for other people's safety. Generally with no insurance (either medical or for the bike).

Bottom line for posers: They just want to look cool.

We all have a bit of each in most of us. But it's a question as to who affects YOUR safety.

My vote is for the squid.

I hate to admit this but I actually found that story about the squid going 70% off on the skin kinda' funny. Only because that guy got what he had coming to him. We ride motorcycles. They are not toys and should be respected. They are a lot of fun but our fun shouldn't come at the expense of others on the highway. Do like JonWright, save the antics for the back roads and the track.

I voted Poser.

A poser is always a poser and its hard to tell if they are one untill ya ride with em and its real hard to get em to ride. Its a freaking game to them. They don't want you to know there a poser so they hide by not riding, I don't understand em,

And I did start out as a Squid, I crashed bikes and I jumped railroad crossings with babes on the back of my GSL1000 and I ran way too fast in crowded areas, I never stopped for cops and I was lucky to have current tags on bike. No bike endorsement on drivers lic, Never Insurance .lol I survived it thank god.

I still have squid in me as well. Most days I wear full protection. But will venture out with boat shoes and tank top and shorts about twice a year and maybe 60 miles. Not bad for a 10,000 mile a year used to be squid.

I can advise you on what will hurt and when your tire is too bald and that you should change that chain, And ya might wanna wear a helmet the next time you ride with me.

I have progressed into a responsable rider and alert of my fellow riders. And able to pass on to new squids my mistakes. I am a valuable member of motorcycling now.

But a poser is always a poser and has no valuable info to pass on except for maybe your helmet don't match your leathers.

A little known fact to posers. Us old squids can spot posers on the spot now. And us old squids know each other was a squid before.

Would I ride with a squid today. Yeah I would if he listened to me. Once he quit listening I quit riding with squid. Would I ride with a poser. lol They could'nt keep up with me to ride , lol and its too damm boring to ride with em.

Motorcycle is freedom a squid is expressing his freedom. I don't know what a poser is expressing.

A squid if he survives will become a damm good rider and use the right equiment. He knows what happens when you hit the ground.

Been there done that.

A poser is useless unless you need fashion help, But a poser will keep dealers in $$$ they don't work on there stuff either,

I am a poser who aspires to squid.

You should have asked how bad for motorcycling people who refer to motorcycling as a lifestyle are.

I was there.....Poser and a squid when I first started riding street bikes.
The squid portion of the whole deal is the one that bothers me....the guy that thinks he's going fast dragging his knee, trying to go around you on the double yellow in the middle of a tight corner, when your just cruzin along.
DANGER...Will Robinson
