Neutral Light Problem

ZX12 Masters,

My 2001 12 has an issue with the neutral light coming on between gears when shifting. The gear box works perfect. The light just seems to come on when you shift (between gears). It lights up then goes away. I do not know if the problem is related to the bike not wanting to start with the clutch pulled in sometimes..leave the clutch out and it starts perfectly. I believe these are two seperate issues. I just stopped pulling the clutch and have never had a problem starting. My biggest concern is the neutral light aggrivation. I am trying to sell the bike and do not want this to be a concern for the buyer.

Thank you for any suggestions.

When you say it starts perfectly with the clutch out I assume you mean with the bike in neutral?

There is a safety interlock to protect you from starting the bike in gear. This interlock relay needs to be grounded. With the clutch out the clutch switch connects it to the neutral switch. When the bike is in neutral the neutral switch is grounded. So with the clutch out the bike must be in neutral.

When you pull the clutch in the interlock switch connects directly to ground. If this intermittently doesn't work then you have a bad ground between the left handle bar and chassis ground.

The neutral light comes on whenever the neutral wire gets grounded. Either the gear position switch is bad or the wire is shorting to ground somewhere. The first thing to check would be to uplug the gear position sensor and see if the neutral light still comes on when your riding in gear. Unfortunately because your clutch switch is messed up you may not be able to start the bike if you do that. If it only comes on when your shifting the problem is most likely in the gear switch

The problem with not starting with clutch pulled in is usually the clutch lever switch gets dirty. You can open it and clean it well and it works after that. Or You can buy a new one. When I've had to open the switch I've also used a punch and a hammer (gently!) method to raise the contacting surfaces a little so it makse better contact. Usually after that "fix" I haven't opened the switch again in many years. Just cleaning usually takes the problem away only for couple of monts or a year at most...

How would the clutch switch affect the neutral light? The neutral light has its own switch. The clutch switch is simply an interlock to keep from starting the bike in gear with the clutch engaged..

I can only imagine that it was genreating a parralel resistance path at the clutch switch moved between earths. Spooky aint it.
