Not primed. I came up with a gadget that spins the sprocket in back of the basket to make sure the pump picked up a suction.then I'll put the clutch in and start. You can try prefilling the oil filter.

if its an air lock prefilling the filter should do it.
theres a plug on the left side of the bike just behind #1 throttle body. unplug it and the injectors wont fire. you can crank it over with the starter to build oil pressure with no fancy tools and it only takes 5 seconds
on a fresh build i like to grease the pump rotor and gob in a bunch of assembly lube. a nice mix hasnt failed yet. oil light goes right out after its fired up

try loosening up the oil filer until there is a small gap between it and the engine. this will vent out all the backpressure and let the pump get primed. as soon as you get oil coming up, stop, tighten it, and hook up your ignition/fuel injection. i did this when i rebuilt my motor and the oil light went out right away after firing it up. i use this same method for oil changes too.
like scott was saying, make sure the oil pump did not go in dry. and dont pack it with thick grease either. just a nice healthy coating like butter on toast will get the job done.
