drag racing launch help
I have a 2000 kawasaki zx12-r, its stretched 10 inches, mtc stage one lock-up kit, full muzzy exhaust, pc3-usb, airshifter, 17/50 gears, 190 shinko. Just took it to the track for the first time and my launches sucked, my best 60ft was a 1.95. Just wondering advice on launching this bike

talk to nox about that clutch. the key is to get it tuned to your weight and the power that the bike is making. how is it currently set up? springs? weights? if i can do 1.68-1.70 on stock wheelbase, you should easily be able to get down in the 1.5s. right now the biggest fudge factor is that clutch setup. depending on how it is, we can't tell whether to pin it and toss the lever (which is actually doable when the lockup is tuned right) or to feather it out.
with a stock motor there is no need for a lockup unless you are getting it setup to be able to toss the lever with it pinned out of the hole. there is tons of info on this board about lockup tuning, but in the meantime we need to know your setup.
if you are trying to learn how to run faster without relying on the lockup, it'd just take it out and learn on a factory clutch setup first. rev it up and get really aggressive on the throttle. have it pinned as soon as possible. if its jerking out of the hole and then bogging, you are getting off the clutch too fast. overreving, getting off the clutch too slowly. try to find that happy zone. and dont let the rpms ever drop below your launch point.
also, get in the zone before runs. visualize rolling the throttle and working the clutch. feel free to get a rear stand and practice body positoin for the launch and picking up your feet. you want to be low with the chin of your helmet in the groove on top of the tank. when you go to run, drive aroud the waterbox and back the rear tire into it. pull forward a couple feet and do a burn out. just rev it up to about 7 or 8 thousand and pop the clutch out. dont forget to grab a good handful of front brake. try to roll it out. just wase off the brake and once it starts moving ease back off the throttle and pull the clutch back in. light up the first amber, then get in the zone we were talking about earlier. rev it up to where you feel comfortable launching (5000 to 6000 works well) and get really low and ready to go. once you're set, easily creep it forward. take baby steps. you have all the time in the world. go on the third yellow. if you see green its too late.

Consider a hand clutch (you don't really need a lock-up). If you spend all of your time trying to learn how to tune a lock-up, you will never learn how to hand clutch. You need seat time...not wrench time!
It can go 1.4's at your wheelbase, hand-clutch, with no problem. For reference, Rick aka Crotchrocket, hand clutches 1.5's consistently with 61" of wheelbase.
Practice is the key. At your wheelbase you will be able to be pretty aggressive with both the throttle and clutch.

i love it
launch around 7000, try to get wot as fast as possible, pull the strap tighter, if the snowflake is setup the way it comes out of the box, take 3 arms off it, dont run any weight. you dont even need it for that hp level unless you run softer springs than stock. try 4 oem springs, you should have way more clutch control. try to keep the front tire on the ground, wheelies arent quick

Would you consider lowering the bike?That bike is way high....lotsa ground clearance

its lowered 2 inches in the rear and has a strap for the front, the strap just wasnt pulled down at the time of the picture

yeah, thats easily a mid-to-low nine second bike, but the only thing that is going to get you there is practice.

With some proper setup and a good rider, that is likely a high 8 second bike. As for the dry shot...well the ET depends on how good or bad of a rider. A 40 shot could get you a few tenths, depending.

one thing to remember is that HP gives you mph and allows for lower ets. to achieve these et's, its all in the clutch, suspension, and tire. and experience.

there is a two step process to getting the clutch out and getting a good 60ft and 330ft time. it is not real easy to figure out but for me when i started to get the feel of how much initial power you can give the bike on launch.
seems to work throwing the lever out mostly while pulling more throttle to keep it from bogging to get the bike going hard then pull full throttle as you let the clutch out the rest of the way. i picked up .1 on a .025 60ft gain getting the better 330 time. superbike mike i race with for man i bet over 15 years is getting great times from his gsxr1000 and it all seems to count to the 330. he has mastered the launch bigtime.
i leave around 7000 to 8000 just at the point where the clutch drags a bit then feed it some throttle as i let the clutch out a lot then pull wide open and let out the rest of the way.
you can throw the clutch out and at this point you will to much better but after you get the bike out the 330 in important for the extra et. i got bad habbits for 15 years of running with out a strap (that worked good then for those bikes) but now that i can come out hell bent for election it is hard to do something different. but seat time is the key. good hardware is important also and seems you have the hardware.

about .05 but the 330 is better by.15 someone that went to some drag school said about doing that that way (two step) and i tryed it when i was stock length and i ran a 9.62 but being short it was hairy to do .lee from lee cycles does that also instead of just getting it out as fast as u can. it is harder than getting it out fast but with non zx14 and busa torque this works better et wise for me.(treat it like a cr125 on a hill)

shane i was thinking about this. i was getting my clutch out sort of quick one day knowing i want to slide it more but changeing takes time. i was running 9.61 with a 1.638ish number and next pass i got it better with not letting it all the way out before going wide open and letting her come up somemore. to my suprise i ran a 9.51 with only a .025 gain in 60ft. the 330 was someware like .06 better. either way it was the getting the better 330 that got it. i think the 330 was a 4.12 on that run. i have a 4.096 sofar. i am still telling my self to come out with more power and clutch when i get moveing. i did have 2 1.59 60s so i am chipping away at it. that 1.56 i got would of been in the low 9.40 if the shift to second would of happened.
also i am going to go to cecil wed night to the gruge test and tune. if you can make the trip i and sounds like tshults will be there. maybe we can do reaction time for a dollar.
