strange stats on the plane (just saw a news conference) ... right engine had 270 (aprox) hours on it... left engine (one that blew up) had 9950 (or something like that) hours on it.... engine overhaul is supposed to be at 10000 hours according to AA official .... hmmmmm

My wife just flew out to LA yesterday.
She called after she heard. Now she is really spooked to fly back. Even if it turns out to be a mechanical breakdown, it makes a person think twice about flying. I'll just stick to flying at ground level on the 12 for awhile.

you now what is weird though..... they said that one engine could fall off and the other one should be able to keep the aircraft going. How could both engines fail at the same time???? sounds a little fishy but I dont know....
I have to fly to KC from FL tommorow....shit!!!!

Aircraft are designed to fly with one engine that has failed. They are not designed to fly with one of the engines missing. The engines are rather heavy and having that much weight missing from the aircraft will upset the handling to a degree that it is impossible to fly.
Just as an example hold your arms out horizontal with 20 lbs in each hand. Then drop one of the weights and see what happens.

that makes sence but the aviation expert on the news said "if the engine seizes, it is designed to break off and then the other engine could still support the plane"
is that an incorrect statement???

All newer aircraft engines have what is called a scatter shield. Usualy made out of titanium or kevlar. It is designed to keep all moving parts from exiting out the side of the engine. Full containment should take place. The engine should not depart the aircraft.
If the engine seizes there could be enough torque to rip the engine off the wing.

Could be because they were gunning it during takeoff, making a turn or something...maybe the breakoff design works at steady speeds at an altitude(25k) where the control could have a chance of being brought back.

In a nut shell if an engine falls off a twin engine airliner You Are Fucked! The aerodynamic and weight loss is too great to overcome.

One wing was found in the bay waters.
For the wing to "break off", the wing spar would have to break. Its typically the strongest part on the air frame.
There wouldnt be nearly enough load on the spar from rotational deceleration forces to break the spar in half.
This "explosion" they are speaking of had to have damaged the wing spar. Its not a "normal" thing for an engine explosion to break the wing spar. Not that any of this is "normal".
Could the fuel cause this type of "explosion"?

Yea it really makes people think now.
Even if it is a mechanical failure, it will hurt the industry even more. The timing couldnt be worse.
I'm not convinced that they believe what they are saying about this being a mechanical failure. I think it may be spin control for the biggest flying week of the year coming up. We'll have to wait and see.
My wife is on her way to SanDiego today. She didnt seem nervous at all.

I watched a show about commercial aircraft construction and they showed a test where they has 1 million!! pounds of force pulling up on the ends of the wings before they separated from the body. They be strong.

So, it wasnt the main wing that broke off like the early reports said.
It was the tail section.
Who knows what would cause that!
What a mess.
