burnt wires

just wandering if any one has used any ricks stators or regulators. if so what to expect for reliability? I was on my way to work when my reg. plugs fried and smoke started pouring from under the passenger seat. going to test them this weekend to verify which one or both are bad. any input would be nice oem parts are about $550.00 and ricks are about half that.

I tested both parts per the service manual and they both tested good. I am going to take the reg. to work to test it with the 3 battery test to verify. but the stator is pushing 110 ac volts out all 3 at 4000 rpm and all the resistance tests are good so kinda stumped on why it burnt.

Ran the 3 battery test on the reg. worked fine no bad results so I repaired the harness and installed a new stator plug and has been fine for a few days now. kinda weird why it burnt. oh well seems fine now and didnt cost a thing other than some time.

many people including me have just done away with the plug and never had an issue ..... alot of the issues are to do with the plug and the leaching of oil through the stator wire so solder&heat shrinking is a great fix

Definatly cut out the OEM connectors. When I had problems with my stator, I replaced the stator and the regulator/rectifier with the units from Rick's electronics. I ended up having to remove both the connectors, the three wire one going to the rectifier/regulator, and the five wire one leaving the regulator/rectifier. Once I did that the Rick's units seem to be working properly. I have put on over 500 miles on mostly long rides.
