Service Stands & more....???
What kind of service stands does everyone recommend?
I see there are really two kinds. There are adjustable ones that fit every swingarm setup. There are also some that allow swingarm spools, which I think is the way I am going to go.
Are there pro's and con's toward either route?
And with the route using the swingarm spools, what size spools do I need for my 02 12? Do I have to worry about any other specifics to the service stand itself?
I have been looking at Pit Bulls...is there any others I should consider?
And what else do I need for the front stand to work, or will any stand work?
Thanks.

dude,
2 words, pit bull. thats it. dont even consider a swingarm stand. i bought a LP swingarm stand and it sucked, bad real bad. no matter what the cost, get yourself a good spooled stand. while your at it, get a front stand too. i cant tell you how glad i am that i bought front and rear pit bull stands.

Handy stands (click on "Shop Products" on the left) http://www.handyindustries.com/fhs.asp
Pit Bull stands - http://www.pit-bull.com/Stands.htm
I have had Lockhart Phillips and Pit Bull rear stands and still have a LP front stand. LP has improved their rear stand by changing it from "folding" to "one piece". Now that I have a Pit Bull SS rear stand (using spools), I'd never go back to LP.
I like how the LP front stand has small "L plates" that the fork bottoms rest on, as well as the pin that goes into the fork tube. The down side is that the plates cover the axle pinch bolts, making it more of a hassle during a front wheel removal. I've used a Pit Bull "Fork Lift" and just didn't feel too comfortable with how the forks just rested on the two cushions. It appeared to be more then stable, but just didn't look that reassuring since it does not use pins to go into the bottom of the fork tubes like LP's and Handy's do.
As far front stands go, IMHO, it boils down to where your going to be using them most of the time. If it's basically for use in your own garage, the Pit Bull "Standard Front" would be the way to go. Not only is it extremely sturdy, but it allow total access and removal on anything from just the front wheel to the forks.
If you plan on using your stands at the track or during a trailered road trip, the $99 deal for BOTH the front AND the rear stands is about the only way to go. Very light weight and compact, yet sturdy enough to safely hold your "baby" for any length of time. This is especially true for track applications, where the bike goes up and down on the stands repeatedly.
Now, this isn't a "dis" against Pit Bull, because their reputation and dependability is beyond question. Still, at $140 for the rear stand and the fork lift... EACH ($149 for the "Standard Lift"), it'd seem that the Handy stands would look rather attractive for anyone on a budget.

Pitbull makes the best rear stand. Go with the spool type. The spool set-up is more secure and positive. Woodcraft front stand is the best front stand. You want the front stand that picks the bike up via the steering neck. Hands down these are the best stands I have come across.

Of course Pitbulls are nice, but some folks are on a budget...lol.
The Handy stands are nice for the $99 plus shipping they cost.
The Handy stands work well with my cycle lift too.

Pit Bull. The SS rear gives the most flexibility because you can use it with or without spools. I went with the forklift with the converter on the front, again because it's the most flexible setup.
Oh, check out the ZX-12 customer bike on the Pit Bull site, it may look familiar.

Funny, I just can't see the words "cycle lift" and "budget" being in the same sentence.

Just out of curiosity Dave...how come every pic I see (and absolutely love) of your blue 12 always show it without the cowl covering the rear seat? Just curious if you keep it like that all the time? Any reason why?
And what are the size of the swingarm spools I'm going to need for that Pit Bull setup since I'm going to order the same deal?????

beans,
I've got two rear seats, one with the cover and one without and there are a few pictures (very few) of that bike with the cowl on it. I'm not a fan of tank bags so I have a tail bag that I use, the bike is a go-for machine as much as possible and I also have a girlfriend that rides there from time to time. I guess I'm saying I use the back end for a lot of stuff that doesn't fit in well with the cowl cover so it stays in that mode most of the time. If I'm going to be somewhere where I know I won't need it (Gap trip, pic below) then I throw the other seat on. I also get told all the time to take off the luggage bolts, but I use them, there's a cargo net in the tail all the time.
The spools are Pit Bull part number F0023, which are 10MM. You can get them in silver, gold, red, blue, black, green or purple. Mine are red because I pulled them off my red bike, but I think the contrast looks good. If you get the front lift make sure you let them know it's a 2002, the pin sizes are different than the '00 and '02. For the '02 you need the #2 pin, the earlier years use a #5 which is smaller.
If you have any other questions about the stands just ask, or you can email Charlie VanValkenburgh who is the owner and President of Pit Bull at pitbull@hiwaay.net . Charlie is very helpful and very appreciative of feedback. You may want to ask him to shoot you a price too, he has some flexibility in the packaging and I ended up buying directly from him after I shopped around.
Hope this helps,
Dave

Thanks Dave, really...lots of good info and feedback I always get from you. I love to see your blue 12 to see what the possibilites look like afterwards should I do similiar stuff.
But if I may throw in a tidbit of info to you in return...I'm not a big fan of tank bags either. It sucks the 12 has a plastic tank cause a magnetic Marsee bag would look ooh soo nice. But I got a TourMaster TB-18 color matching blue and it works great. You have to pay the $10 extra to get the extended tank pad for the bag to sit on. But it looks really nice, the blue stripe looks good on our 12, and it holds a lot of stuff. It compresses down easily, has a map view, raincover.
I never have it on, but it's just in case. The backpack doesnt look too good when I'm wearing that Vanson leather jacket .
Tomorrow I'm going to shine the ole 12 up, and take some pics of her. I sure like your bike, between you and Zhooligan's bike, sheeesh...you guys are hella rich to my poor bike purchasing days.

I'm not certain about the rich part. Considering the fact that you are just a young man and you have a 12 your not doing to bad!!
