Winterizing

Guys!!

I have to winterize my 12 over the next 2 weeks and am trying to gather information. I have the techniques but the details are the question.

1. Those of you who do winterize, do you fog the engine or squirt oil into the cylinders??

2. If you squirt oil, how much has to be removed to get at the plugs??

3. If you fog where do you inject the fog??

TIA

Wayne

Yeah, this was touched on in a different post, but I'd like to learn more about it also.

Instructions used to be in the owner's manual for winterizing. Sheesh, it'd be a royal pain in the ass to pull the plugs to get oil into the cylinders. Hell, I'd just run it out of gas, pull the battery and put it on a trickle charger. Then lift both ends of the bike with stands, throw a cover over the bike and call it good.

Its better to leave the tank full of gas to reduce corrosion and put in gas stabilizer. Can use fog until bike stalls that'll accomplish the same as oil in the cylinders.

Rest is OK

Fogging or oiling the cylinders is not really necessary with a ZX12 if you store in a dry place...especially since the cylinders are plated (no rust). A full tank of gas with preservative is a good idea. -ZXtra

Wayne,
When I store my bikes I do an oil rinse to make sure all the old acidic oil is out. (we have long winters here)
It only costs you 3 quarts of cheap automotive oil.
drain your dirty oil, install your new "storage filter" and run in cheap oil for a few minutes then drain.
Finally, change to your storage oil and run that in for a minute.

what do you folks think about closing off the exhaust and snorkel to keep moisture out?
I know moisture gets in anyhow, but when the garage is full of wet concrete from dripping cars and the temperature changes alot I would think that the really moist air would get in there more and try to corrode things.
last year I put a spraypaint cap on my exhaust after blasting a short spurt of WD-40 in there and i folded a garbage bag and stuffed it into the norkel to seal it.
anyone think that may cause problems?

Do you squirt oil into the cylinders through the plugs or fog through the throttle bodies??

Instead of squirting oil, run a tad bit of two stroke oil (synthetic) in a bit of gas to coat your cylinders. Should work as well as trying to fog the cyclinders with oil. My two cents worth!!!!

Z

The real issue for me is not having to access the plugs, the tops of the throttle bodies is easier??

You want to "winterize" your bike? Move to Texas! Our winterizing means we may have to waer a Jacket in Decmeber and January.
