12 Gets SlammedAgain
How come the recent bike reviews keep slamming the 12. I just picked up the November copy of BIKE and PERFORMANCE BIKES. Neither one was very complementary and gave the BUSA the nod in every category ??????? BIKE hammered the 12 on handling, transmission, fit & finish, brakes etc. Is the 12 that bad and we are all blind????

the current "sport rider" issue compared the 2, with a focus on performing the usual add ons (pipes, filters etc). seemed to come to a tie more or less. not sure why bike trashed the 12, sounds fishy to me. i never heard a rider say the busa had better handling.
incidentally, i keep fergettin to find a scanner & scan in an article in a bike mag here (all in japanese) that did their annual rating a couple months ago. 12r was selected as the overall bike of the year. busa came in third i think, 2nd was gsxr1000 (memory may be failing there tho). apparently the japanese magazines r a bit smarter

ZXRCY, Let me tell you a short story, about 10 years ago I picked up a Cycle World Mag. and started reading the comparision between a full dress Harley and a GL1500 (goldwing). The conclusion of the article sai that the Harley had a much smoother ride than the Goldwing. That day I cancelled my subscription. Moral of the srory is whoever is buying lunch that day is going to win the review. The only magazine I put faith in MCN (90%) because their is no advertisment. I to have driven both the Hayabusa and ZX12, as far as comfert goes it's not even close Hayabusa hands down. On the ZX12 my nuts went mumb after 30 min. and my lower back was hurting

And the current issue of Superbike included the ZX12 in their superbike of the year shootout. They said they didn't include the 'Busa because the ZX12 "laughs" at it.
All this makes it pretty difficult to believe in an objective press. It seems to go way further than simple differences of taste. I could see someone saying that both are good, but I like this one better because it suits me better. It would be easier to reconcile with another mag saying they like the other one better.
I would like the chance to get a good ride on a 'Busa, but I don't have any friends that have one. (An aquaintance or two, but not close enough to ask for a ride)

I've also got that issue of Superbike. They basically said they didn't even consider testing the Busa over the 12. I have to say though that British mags are far better than American mags. Cycle world and Motorcyclist make me sick.

The Superbike sboty test had lots of good things to say about the 12. They said that it got boreing racing the other bikes on the roads. They said that the TGV (fast ass european train) was the only obvious target for the 12. This was in a side by side ride with an R1,and a gixer 1000 to name a few. They admitted that the 12 was heavier, but they all loved riding it. they praised the brakes. They also liked the handeling. They said thet the 12 could be leaned over until the winglets touched. I like the British rags, but the american trash sucks. I agree with the "whomever buys lunch gets a good review" theory.

As most of you know my old lady has a 2K Busa. I don't ride it much at all, as I hate for little kids to run in fear screaming mommie that thing has one eye! But she rides both bikes, heres the deal she will never say it. But I have to beg her to get off the 12. She claims it feels lighter thats why she likes it. I say to each his own, mags and the media are both driven by advetisments. Who ever spends the money gets the reviews. Not saying the 12 is gods gift to cycling. But it isn't the turd the mags make it to be either.

Thirty two years ago (in college), two of my roomates were talking about stereo sound systems. One said, "I'm gonna buy Kenwood. Whatever magazine said it is the one to get." The other guy said, "Well, before I buy either system, I listen to them, and then I make up my mind." And I think that is how any sensible person is going to determine which product is best. Try it and see; don't let some rag tell you how it is, especially with a subjective evaluation. The fact is that some of these magazines are worth less than the paper they're printed on.

That's all great for a stereo or a new car. You can try those out. But it is very difficult to get test rides on japanese sportbikes, I don't know of any dealers around these parts that will do it.
That is one of the reasons why it disturbs me so much that the mags seem to be so full of shit. They know they have a responsibility to their readers to be objective and tell the truth. But when you look at the drastically different stories you get on these two bikes, you have to wonder what the hell is going on.

You gotta wonder
I have a 99 Fireblade I ride on the track. I love it. It is light and nimble compared to the 12 but I love riding the 12 for its visceral power, but it also has great brakes and the gearbox is pretty smooth and its stable at speed and handles well for a big bike. I like BIKE magazine but when I read their superbike shootout I thought "are we talking about the same bike" or am I missing something. They shit on the engine response, brakes, gearbox, finish. The only thing they liked is the looks. I traded rides with a friend who has an Aprilia RSV Mille and he thought the brakes on the 12 were great compared to his Mille. The Mille was nice but its power curve is weany compared to the 12. I like my Blade as much as his Mille and its half the price. The only way to solve the comparo debate I guess is to squeeze a ride out of my local dealer on a Busa and see for my self.

Wildman, Yes, you are right. But it still doesn't mean that people need to accept the words of "journalists" as the truth. If nothing else, read on the internet. These forums are for sure better than many of those rags.

Probably the best assesment of a new bike I've ever seen was done by Brian Catterson in Cycle World. They were testing a new full dress Harley and Don Canet was just raving about it. (as usual) Catterson says "I'd rather pop open a beer and sit on a dryer with a tennis shoe in it, the ride would be better!". How's that for tellin' it like it is? (Of course, every test he has made since then has pretty much followed Canet)

THE 12 KICKS ASS.........WE ALL KNOW IT !!!!
Everyone here knows what a truly "Kick Ass" machine the 12 is. Any of you guys that ride in groups with your friends know what an awesome machine it is out on the road. If the group you ride with is similar to mine, meaning no other 12s or busas, stop and think of how many times you've had to wait on everyone to catch up. Or how many times you just putted for a mile or so, at a crawl, looking in your mirrors going "FUCKING COME ON GUYS.....WTF"!!!!!!
I'm glad I found out for myself what the 12 was all about. It is hands down the funnest bike I've ever had, and it never ceases to amaze me at how well it does everything. It's a hoot, and a far better machine than most mags give it credit for being. I've read several good comments about it on MCN. It seems like those boys over there know a good thing when they see it.

...reading?...I only look at the pictures...
...I remember how I've chosen all of my bikes...I buy the magazines..I look at the pictures...I read the text...I laugh...I go to the showrooms, I sit on the bikes, I test ride (if available)...I buy what stirs me emotionally...its what I have to like, not what the mags or other people like..I could give a SHIT what anybody says about my choice...its what I like, its what impresses ME...I like all kinds of bikes and their particular idiosyncracies...so people laugh at you and your choice...fuck 'em!...you can laugh at them, too, for their choices...as Otis says, "Its a free country brother"...did I get to test ride my 12R?
...no, but I just "knew" and the 12R is what I thought it'd be...INCREDIBLE!!!...I've ridden several other bikes that I wouldn't have considered buying/owning...the results were usually what my gut feelings told me in the first place...look at it this way, the slams have given us great deals...we KNOW better about the 12R than the "I'm in the magazines so I must be important motojournodildo" does...we LIVE with our bikes 24/7...enjoy your ride and don't sweat it...you'll live longer...

I'm sorry professor fuckstick. I'll try not to make that error again. I had a friend from Michigan (yeah I know) arrive yesterday afternoon. We stayed up all night sniffing glue and talking about how fucking ignorant southerners are.
Then afterwards I took a tire iron and gave his face a few adjustments. LMFAO

my two cdn cents worth.......
Congratulations to all you Zx-12r owners. You are the proud owners of one if not the Best high speed road bikes ever devised-period. When the Zx-11 C came out, the mags and the governments where rumbling about hp limits, bans and outlawing them all together. People had bought Zx-10's in crates figuring that the end was near for hyper-bike. This was with a bike capable of 175-178 mph top speed(different mags-different results)127 rear wheel hp, 0-60 mph in 2.63 seconds and 10.23 @ 136 mph quarters stock when stock ment just that. Pilot was the late Jay Gleeson-rest in peace.
Now FAST FORWARD (pun intended) to today's 00 Zx-12r - 158 rear wheel hp-stock-top speeds upward of 192 mph and 9.50's @ 149 mph quarters. The late Jay Gleeson would have possibly gone that with the bike stock - no straping and lowering. But still an amazing feat. In ten years from the first C model to the release of the 12r, the bar has been raised 30 rear wheel hp, 1/2 sec and 13 mph in the quarters, brakes that are one of the best in the business. Should I go on...
The bar will never be raised that high ever again. The Zx-12r is truly a open road hyper-bike. One where traveling 150 mph is just as easy as 50 mph-just not for the rider. LOL. The bike does not what to run below a ton, because there its just strolling along.
The mags have to justify a bike of this caliber to there readers. Its hard for the law-abiding corporations to come out and say this bike will come out of 1st at 88 mph, and you still have 5 gears left :-) So they are looking at it from a everyday riding situation for a law abiding citizen. The busa may be in this instant "a better bike".
The reality is that the Zx-12r was given birth and Kawasaki said-"what have we done"!!! We have created a Monster! It is hard edged, rough around the edges with that un-mistakeable 1198cc Kawasaki mill churning out hp like no other.
I get my satisfacation from the fact that as stated before, I own one if not the best mass-produced hyper-bikes of all time-maybe forever.
