Drag racing opinions !!!

Well I'm throwing my hat into the ring again so to say....I'm gonna drag race my 12...Let's see...so far I have a full Akro race exhaust system, BMC race filters, smog system deleted with muzzy block off plates, PCIII USB, Nikko Racing G-Pack, crankcase vented to atmosphere, 17 tooth front sprocket, adjustable lowering links in the rear, lowered about 1.5" in front.......I just ordered a 48 tooth rear sprocket and swingarm extensions...my question is with these mods to the bike what times can I hope to achieve...60ft, 1/8, 1/4....I'm experienced at drag racing and lauching etc...but I've never raced my 12 at the strip before, just on back roads against guys talking shit which is totally different than the strip...I've raced mostly busa's and 1000's at the strip...guys that I talk to say that a 12 is a bike unto itself, it's one you really need seat time to develop clean starts and good 60ft times at the strip...any advice you guys can give me on wheelbase length with my gearing I plan to run, rear suspension setup, launch rpm ? I'm always looking to get whatever edge I can as early as I can...Oh I'm 6ft 3" and weigh 225lbs, and my bike puts182 to the rear wheel, just in case somebody wanted to get technical about calculating times..lol

What year 12???

Put 16-47 if your not going to ride on the street...

Stage @ 5,500 so u dont heat the clutches up too much, unless you have a lock-up...

Go no less than 62inch wheelbase...

U need a tiger tail other wise the tire will hit the fender at launch...Depends on which year 12 u have of how many clockwise turns to the shock colar...

Michelin Race soft or Pirelli super corsa sc0 or sc1...

Cant really say what ur ET will be since I dont know your skills???

yeah, thats kinda like saying you've played baseball for a while and then asking us how far you can throw a ball.

times aren't really something you calculate. unless you wanna compare to yourself. i.e. each tenth i lose off my sixy is two at the big end while other guys its three. either way it sounds like you got a pretty nice setup going on. should be interesting to see what it does at the track once you get it dialed in. keep us updated

My 12 is a 2005...I was thinking about maybe 64" on the wheelbase, I'll be running a Pirelli tire and leaving somewhere around 5,000-6,000 rpm...that's about where I would leave on anything else I raced...I've been warned about the rear tire hitting also...Do you think a 17, 48 setup would be to much for the street...It would be a quick ride from stoplight to stoplight...lol I could cut consistant 1.60 or less 60ft times with my other bikes...just listening to some people who've raced them saying that a 12 needs considerable seat time to get used to...it's not like going from bike to bike like I'm used to...whatever..lol

I ran 17/47 on the street plenty, at stock wheelbase. I think 17/48 will be fine...

last year i ran 16/50 on the streets. its real nice for city stuff. just let off the clutch from idle then give it gas. for some reason it broke lose a lot too

also makes the clutch last a lot longer when you're racing since you don't have to ride it out as far

You have a PC3r?

2004-2005 has dual flies like the 14's, so you need to remove the secondary flies to get that quick reaction launch!!!...So you need the PC to tune it...

I've got the Nikko Racing G-Pack which says that it advances the opening of the sencondary butterflies, I have a PCIII... Should I just take the secondary butterfly's out all together ? After installing the G-Pack it did feel like it pulled harder down low and in midrange, but I installed everything together and sent it to the dyno to be tuned with my PCIII so that could be the differnce also..lol Would pulling the secondary flies out hurt anything as far as power delivery anywhere in the rpm range ? I know the 14 guys pull them out all the time.

I have one more issue to work out, I have a Scott's steering damper on my bike also..which makes it impossible to use a lowering strap in the front unless I remove it ( pain in the ass) just to go racing on the weekend...I've heard of some guys using blocks inside their forks to compress the springs to get the lowered height in front...what do you guys know about this ?

Fasttimez: I have the Scott's Dampner and Straps. It works out great. Make sure you take the tail of the strap and wrap it around the dampner's mounting bar. (shoot, if you're worried, use some kind of small clip to hold it together.)

i have my strap going on the tank sige of the post and it is just fine. do not take it off to race it i went down cause i did not have it. when i put my extencions on at 4" i am going to go 18/50 to be close to my 16/44. i say 18 front cause it will be eaiser on the chain being a bigger sprocket dia.for you being your weight i bet you could do 18/51 or 52 i will run out of motor in 4th that high i think.
with your weight longer and no flys to make it hard to launch i say 9.7ish with a 1.5xx 60ft.

I wrap my strap around the lower brace on the front forks and it works great...
and I dont mean to be the party pooper, but at your weight and everything I have to agree with RR and say 9.7-9.8 but with low 1.6, high 1.5 60foot times

good luck and have fun!!!!

Well I can honestly say that the clutch on this bike takes alot of getting used to as far as launching and feathering go....my 60ft times were the worst of my life ever...I was cutting .006-.008 lights on the tree and then would either give it to much throttle to early or ride the clutch to long...my 60ft times were 2.00 seconds....WTF...I have never ran slower than 1.60 60ft on any bike I rode... I couldn't keep the rear tire from spinning out of the hole and when I tried to control wheel spin I would ride the clutch entirely to long...the stock clutch sucks ass on this bike...my mph in the 1/4 traps was 135-137. plenty of power once it hooked up, hell it would blow the tire off when shifting into 2nd half the time...I need to run a Shinko and do some rear suspension tuning...I'm used to running mid 9's on my suzuki's, this 12 is going to take some getting used to.

I used to run 10.40s on a 95 gsxr 750, granted this was 7 years ago, i just came back from the local track n only ran a 10.23 on my 2000 zx12. Yeah yeah yeah, i know. 60ft was 1.6.s. 110mph at the 1/8th, 134 through the quarter. Plus i got a 1270 kit. I was pissed i couldnt just go out there n get back in the saddle n run a 9 easy with the 12, the 750 had 121hp. I got that beat by bout 50hp. I have went up 2 in the back, comin out the hole she would fall on her face then pick back up, i was going through at the top of 4th, i also have a 240 tire on the back so i m sure that slows it up but it should get down to 9.7, 9.8s wit better 60s.

Also while at the track i noticed alot of the bikes exhaust tips where white or light grey, mine is so black that it looks like the black is coming back up the outside of the exaust tip, is this signs of a wayyyyy to rich map. Also could this be why she dies out the hole then picks back up. Black smoke has been seen comin out at high revs. I always thought black was fuel n blue or white is blowby oil round piston rings. Ne time pullin from low rpms she boggy n as soon as rpm gets up 4500- 5k she clears out nicely. should the timin be changed

I cross the trap in 5th gear @ 10500rpm. The white exhaust tips you see at the track are probably the guys who run c-12/c-14 gas.
