Would you buy this bike ?

1999 ZX-9R for $2,750.

It's in Little Rock so it would be a little hard for me to see it until I make the trip. I've been thinking about a track bike and was looking at 9R's and since this is a pretty Kaw knowledgeable group I thought I'd ask here.

Any opinoins are welcome. Thanks !

Here's an email from the owner about the bike:

I bought the bike wrecked. The bike is currently registered in AR and has insurance. I have had
the bike for 2 years on 11-20-01. At the time of purchase the bike was missing all of the hand controls, switches, foot controls, all of the plastic, headlight, seats, mirrors and miscellaneous hardware. Bike is only
lacking mirrors and side fairing. I rode the bike all summer and now ride it about once a week. Its been to cold. Bike rides straight and is extremely fast.

That's all I know except that it's supposed to have 2000 miles on it.

Dave that's a tough call. What's top $$$ for a '99 model 9R. Have you checked the NADA guide to see? I will say that what I saw in the pictures was a clean bike that needs just a few more $$$$$ thrown at it to get it looking right. BUT that tells us nothing about any frame damage that may have occured when it was wrecked. I'd have to ride it to make a call. I know you are a long way from Little Rock. Maybe you could have redelk go check it out for you and give you the 411?????

NADA says:
Low Retail: $4,625
Average Retail: $6,085
High Retail: $6,575

The cycletrader.com price check on current ads says:

Low: $5,000.00
High: $7,900.00
Average (mean): $6,737.50
Median: $7,000.00

I know it needs a few things, but I'm not looking to make it show condition, just track condition. I may be able to recover the cost with parting it out if the frame is wasted. We'll see. Thanks for the response.

No problem Dave. It may pan out to be a good deal. The bike does look VERY clean in the pics. I like the 9R and have put a few miles on one back when a friend of mine had one. It's a fun bike to ride and a great wheelie machine.

Would you buy this bike ?

DaveInDaytona...The three questions I would ask myself are:

1- Can I get anything else for this kind of money that is as good or as much bike? Answer- Probably not.

2- Is this a good candidate for a track bike? Answer- I think it is. It is a current model which has good after market equipment support. It is low mileage, so there should be alot of life left in the motor. Even is the crash has resulted in a couple "teaks" to the frame or whatever else, it'll be a track bike. Track bikes have a habit of going down once or twice a season. You don't necessarily want to start with a "like new" condition machine.

3- If things don't work out, can I get my money back? Answer- Yes, I think you can get all your money back and more if you put signals, some used lowers and front fender, and some paint on it.

So I would say "Go for it" and have fun!

If it's going to be your track bike you can't go wrong! Good power, easy handleing bike that is a steal. Even if it's a little less than perfect if trackdays are all your useing it for why not? Maybe you could even glue some fun-fur on it and learn to do some stunts. Get IT.

I say that would be a great track bike. I had a 1996 9R & a 1998 9R, They were both great handling bikes with plenty of power. I put 63,000 miles on my 98 9R. If you get it and change your mind later let me know, if I have that cash I would take it off of your hands.

Good luck,
Alan

Dave I had a 99 ZX9 and if I had the money I would jump on that deal. Even if you wanted to make it a street bike the deal is not bad. I wish I still had mine. For me the 9r was a lot more fun to ride then the 12r.

B.T.W. if you pick it up I have the right side fairing in blue with some very minor scratches just make a reasonable offer.

As a former 98 9r owner I'd say it sounds like a deal. They are good solid bikes.

Its a high mount pipe, instead of a normal mount, which raises the mount height a lot.I could be wrong (and proably am)because the high mounts usually mount in line with the rear body work and after looking at that one it dosen't.........so I have no idea and I'll shut up now .
