zx12 on the track, whats the story?

if i take my bike to the track and want to run some laps, should i take off the lower wings from the fairing? will they scrape in the hairpin turns? will the stock pipe scrape? anyone know of where the hell to mount frame sliders? any other track mods i should know of?

You will probably need to tape over all lenses first. Pretty much required everywhere. Winglets can stay on unless you want to save them in a crash. Most important for a fun time is good tires. I run Rennsports on the track. A 190 is good for faster tracks like Road America, a 180 for tighter tracks. I haven't done a track day with stock exhaust can but the feelers on your pegs are gonna hit first. If you are grinding the pegs, then it's time to worry about the exhaust can. Oh yeah, take off the turn signals and mirrors. If I'm lazy I will leave the front turn signals on and just tape them over. Some tracks require you to run Water Wetter, depending on the class you're riding in. And some require safety wiring various items such as oil drain plug, oil filter and oil fill plug. Hell, one tech inspector had me run a piece of tape across my gauges even. No biggy, you won't need gauges except to occasionally look at your speed on the long straights and think "Holy Sh*t". Of course, good brakes are a must. I was amazed at how loud the HH pads get when heated up to racing temp. Some bikes have quieter exhaust, I swear. Shoot me an e-mail if you need to. You will be surprised how well the 12 can do on the track, but if you are going to do alot of track days, you may end up wanting a more race oriented machine.

I forgot, concerning frame sliders: I don't think there is an acceptable way to do them. At least I haven't seen them. Anybody?

LP sells a couple different frame slider packages for the 12, along with bar sliders, swingarm spool sliders, etc. There's a thread on it in here, just search for 'crash'. Jason - There's no way you can lean the bike over far enough to drag the wings. Try this: Take a yardstick, and stick it in line with the edge of the tire, then lift it up until it makes contact with the bodywork. Check out the angle of the stick, then lower it back down until it rests on the ground. That should give you an idea of how far you would have to lean the bike over before grinding something like the fairing winglets.
12R Pilot was spot on with the different requirements. You can get on the track in two different ways:

1. Track days, usually organized by a riding club or dealership. These let you ride around the track with a group of fellow street riders on your motorcycles. Preperation of the bikes is usually restricted to taping the lights and signals, and ensuring the bike has a good set of tires and no leaks. Riders are allowed one or two piece leathers, and back protectors are not required, but definately encouraged.

2. Club racing - much more stringent preperation of the bike is required, with several items requiring safety wiring, all drain lines going to a catch bottle, water wetter replacing coolant, turn signals, lights and horns removed, etc... Two piece leathers are allowed, but must utilize a zipper that goes completely around the suit. Back protecters are required. Depending on the organization, you would be racing your 12 in a couple different classes, such as Open Superbike or Formula Unlimited. You would find yourself pitted against RC51s, R1s, CBR954RRs, and of course, GSXR1000s. Have fun on the straights, because you are going to get eaten alive on the turns!

If you touch the lower wings on the fairing it will be because you have crashed! I found the stock suspension to soft and the lower left side would rub in reasonable fast left handers. Otherwise it does fine for a big bike. And pretty much dittos to what 12R saif above.

Here is a really helpful site.
http://trackjunkie.com/index2.htm

I forgot about back protectors. One of the clubs I belong to requires them for all classes on track days. Prolly a good idea to have one anyway. I would also recommend lots of gas cuz at the track the stuff's expensive as hell.

Zhooligan! Hey, the fairing and stuff came in for the ZZR yesterday. Didn't check the porch until about 10:00pm, and the boxes were sitting there. Took me bout 40 minutes to put everything on. I'm mobile again!
