Changing clutch question?

I will be replacing my clutch on my 2000 ZX12 soon and have a question. I have a manual and read the clutch section and am a little confused. They mention using a tool to line up the inner hub with the basket or something. I also read a post in the past that mentioned the importance due to the oil pump. The instructions are confusing can someone explain the purpose and what needs to be done in english for me???

I am putting in the muzzy kit with inner hub and all plates and fibers. I have done a lot of clutches and none required a tool to line up the inner hub and basket. However the manual seems to be saying this is what i have to do?

no special tools needed even if you were gonna change the basket! just a bar to lock the wheels,, socket for the cover and cable,, socket and breaker w/pipe for the basket nut and allen for the springs,, and thats it bubba maybe a torque wrench to put it back to spec,, and a small screw for the collar to slip the basket on without fighting it on the way out

you are probly refering to the clutch hub holder. you can make one very easily with a couple old steels and some scrap metal. weld the steels together(lined up) and put a handle on them. then you can take the big hub nut off

That may be what they were talikng about. It just seemed odd that the manual made a point about stating that a certain part of the hub had to be facing forward. This may just be needed for the Kawi tool to work??? i have a clutch holder, Thanks for the info!!

I am making one of those!! Mine is the old vice grip style that always finds a way of popping off and marring up the hub.

if you're only doing a new indder hub you don't need to worry about the special tool to keep the basket gear alligned.

the inner hub and basket don't need to ba alligned.

the tool is only needed when installing a basket. once you get everything opened up you'll notice that the basket gear is two separae gears adjacent to eachother with some springs trying to make them not want to line up. this makes it so that there is no backlash with the crank gear since it is being contacted by both gears, one on each side of the teeth. there is a special tool that is inserted into a hole in the bottom of the clutch basket to line these gears up making it posible to mount on the bike. otherwise the basket would not be seated all the way in and now mesh with the oil pump gear. this part needs to be facing toward the front of the bike so that the end poking out doesn't hit the cases. most guys just jab a screwdriver in there.

you're only changing the inner hub so you don't have to deal with all that stuff.

hope that helped

oh, and make sure its an OEM clutch pack
