DUDE! You got a Dell!
Since everyone is getting "new toys", I thought I'd throw in mine. It ain't a new home or entertainment center, but I'm just as excited about it (I'm easily pleased).
I needed something to both replace my 6 year old TI Extensa 560CD (100 MHz & 16 MB RAM) as well as be my "home" system and hook up to my kids network for DSL. I still can't play Superbike 2000 (XP Home Plus), but in comparison to anything I did have... this baby SMOKES!
Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop
1.6GHz Pentium 4-M processor
400MHz Pentium 4-M external BUS
Intel 845MP AGPSet Chipset w/4X AGP
512KB cache, 32KB Internal Cache (L1)
512MB SDRAM 266MHz DDR RAM
40GB Ultra ATA-100 5400 RPM hard drive
2 Optical Bays (1 Fixed/1 Modular)
Fixed: Combo Drive: 24x/10x/24x CD-RW and 8x DVD
Modular: Currently 1.44 floppy or spare battery
15" UltraSharp UXGA+ TFT active-matrix, 1600 x 1200 resolution
NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go AGP 4X, 32MB DDR RAM, 220MHz controller, 128-bit data width & 350MHz RAMDAC
SoundBlaster compatible audio
Crystal CS 4205 AC '97 software based audio
Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet Network Card with RJ-45, 10/100Base-T (Cat 3, 4, 5) connectors
Supports: Wake on LAN, PXe IP Checksum and ACPI 2.0
Internal 56K Modem
Slots: (2) Type I or Type II cards or (1) Type III card
3.3 and 5v cards supportedand warm-swap capable
I/O Ports: IEEE 1394 integrated port
2-USB compliant 4-pin connectors
Serial infrared communications port (lrDA-1.1 compliant)
S-Video for TV-Out
S/PDIF port for AC-3 digital audio out (Sony, Philips, Digital Interface)
Audio jacks: headphones/line-out, external mic-in, line-in/audio-in
RJ-45 Fast Eithernet
RJ-12 Modem
6-pin PS/2-style keyboard, mouse, and keypad
9-pin serial connector
25-hole pin parallel connector
15-pin monitor connector
Height: 1.75"
Width: 13.03"
Depth: 10.8"
Weight: 7.9 lbs (w/ CD-ROM and floppy drive)
Batteries (2): 8-cell "Smart" Lithium Ion battery 66 WHr
Additional second primary battery
Approximate charge time: ~2.5 hours (computer on), ~1 hours (computer off)
Approximate operating time: 2 - 3 hours per battery
AC Adapter input voltage: 90 to 135 VAC and 164 to 264 VAC
Other additional gizmos I got to go with it are:
Belkin Laptop Travel International Surge Protector w/ retractable phone cord
Kensington USB Flexible Notebook LED Light
8 MB DiskOnKey USB "storage device"
The DiskOnKey is basically worthless, but it is a neat little plug and play gizmo. The wrist pads are interchangable, but I just covered them with "Red Elk's faux carbon fiber".
The UltraSharp display blows away anything I have ever seen. Dell claims it's 20% brighter, has 33% more contrast, 25° more viewing angle (70° in either direction) and has a refresh rate 80% faster then the standard UXGA+ display. I believe them.
We watched The Fast and the Furious on DVD and could not believe how sharp the image was! The sound wasn't even half bad. Still, the Harmon/Kardon 395 external speakers (w/ subwoofer) was a waste of $60. I paid $90 for the Altec Lansing ACS48 system at work and it makes the HK sound like crap! I guess I'll have to save up this winter for something like a Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 with the DD-5.1 preamp. That ought to be equal to a set of tires, eh?

I certainly hope you have more then a regular dial up internet connection for that bad boy. Sounds pretty sweet. Be careful with the lap top, I had my Gateway in my lap about a month ago and had the bottom fall out of my glass. Screwed the unit up. Have not got it fixed yet.
One other item you might want to add (maybe in it and I just don't recognize it in your list) is an wireless internet connection gizmo. Swft installed one for me on my laptop. Really cool, any place in the house or yard you can operate on the internet etc. It enables me to actually retrieve info from my desk top and or send stuff to the desk top, share files and print without a bunch of wires. Way cool. Probably old stuff to some of the tech guys but way cool to this carpenter!

Yes I remember the TRaSh-80s, that is what I learned basic programming on. I also had a PC-3 from Radio Shack if anyone can remember those. 4K ram, 1 line LCD, mini-keyboard built in, basic... I was stylin'!
I also had the very first video game console, Pong. Console had 2 paddle wheels built-in, had like 3 different pong games changed with silver toggle switches, and connected via an R/F connector to your TVs antenna, no cartridge, no CD, no cords to get in the way, no color, oh yeah, it was the sh**!
Oh wait, I think we are going the wrong way with this thread, I think?
Nice system redelk! I have a wireless network in my house, and it is wonderful. Very easy to set up and actually inexpensive these days. 4 port router/wireless hub, and a 802.11b wireless card for your laptop, is the way to go. Less than 200.00.

You can get this for around 130 with rebates, and the card for about 50, if you hunt around.

Granted they arent laptops..but hey...they sure serve up MP3s quickly!
I had a screenshot of some of our 4 and 8proc boxes maxxed out running some of our table updates. I cant imagine the sort of processing power being utilized at that moment :/

Ah... ya'll can not dampen my spirit with your BIG NUMBERS! When one moves from a 100 MHz with 16MB RAM (only reads 1/2 of it) and a 2 GB hard drive to 1.6GHz with 512MB and 40GB drive... all is right with the world.
ddpete3, too bad you didn't get the ENHANCED UXGA (aka UltraSharp). It would blow you away. Just had to get that "dig" in. If you did get it, you'll agree, there is no display out there today that could even compare.
Of course, I learned years ago, to not try and "compare" systems with most of the folks here. The majority of ya'll have thrown away stuff that I'd still kill for. It wasn't until this year that we upgraded our graphic stations from 166 MHz! Ya'll are spoiled and as of today... so am I!
ZHooligan, TeamSpeed & ddpete3... I'm not sure when or if I'll go the wireless route. I'm very rarely home. Not that this would justify not getting one, it's more of a "need & use vs. budget" thing. Hell, I had to "finance" it through my company (payroll deduction) since the company's interest rate is about 1/3 of Dell's.

We have a line of black IBM towers and Compaq towers that service our web pages, charts, reports, and client/server apps. I am not in hardware, but I hear terms like multiple M80s with 8 64bit processors and 6GB ram each, with some older H-thises and H-thats? Is that good? And we are just a 1 year old company w/revenue < 10M a year. I need just one for a web server for home, wonder if I could sneak one home?

8way boxes are becoming more and more common. Id like one of those 64way boxes that unisys makes...but we would have no use for somethign that expensive...then again...I probably said the same thing about an 8way box 3 or 4 years ago ;/
I really cant believe that some of our apps (SQL) can suck up that much memory....wastn that long ago that that much ram was nearly unheard of.
We have some EMC stuff here (Dell sells it under their name for SAN Storage devices)
Its amazing they have 1" 180GB EACH disk drives available now.

I got all the linksys wireless stuff on sale, and I get rebates on all of it, so I just had to do it. Now, I can sit at the pool and work and print stuff. Will I ever do that, probably not, but I CAN.
I also went wireless because I rent and the cable outlet is across the room from where I keep my desktop...around the TV, past the fireplace, through the kitchen doorway, so I wanted to eliminate the wire running around the house.
