zx12 motor into a zx10 frame???

I've got an 02 zx12 with a carpenter built 1290 and i also own an 04 zx10.

I want to put the zx12 engine into the zx10 chassis. I'm figuring i'll have to use the airbox from the zx10 and use it on the zx12 motor. Additionally, use all the electronics from the twelve and modify the brackets for mounting.

Why do this? Simple, it would have excellent hp to weight ratio. It would be fun to ride and be a sleeper to boot. Some would simply say to build a big bore motor for the zx10. I would say thats valid advice. However, i know some of the members on this board live at a mile high location. Besides it would be hoot out motoring everyone on a trackday.

Questions:

1. Has anyone done this and if so what were the pitfalls?
2. How much heavier is the zx12 motor vs. zx10?
3. anyone have the motor dimensions of each?

Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

i could probly weigh a 12 motor if you need me too, its apart, so its no big deal. could measure some stuff too if you want
IMO turbo the 10. then it doesnt matter if you are 2 miles up, your motor gets however many psi you say it does. (one of the reasons blown stuff works so well at bonneville)

I tink it would be easier & cheaper to just mod the ZX10R engine to ZX12R power levels?

Interesting idea, but me thinks adapting so many different parts (engine mounts, exhaust, airbox, chain alignment, etc. to name a few..)

Sounds like to many things & you would save money by installing turbo/etc. on the ZX10 to make it as fast as the 12 is.

Interesting idea tho...

the 12 engine was designed for a monoqoque frame/chassis

maybe you could do it

i dont think it would be better tho

stock the 10 at its best & the 12 simply are not that far apart

if you talk about getting wierd + everything you can do to a 12

maybe there is an advantage

yet you are discounting all that R & D khi put into the 10 engine when essentially
the 12 was standing still

for the money i would turbo the 10........................easily 300+ HP

KZScott, do you mind weighing your zx12 motor? I have the zx10 motor pulled and can weigh that for comparison purposes.

Flight Leader, your right there isn't a huge difference in horsepower between a big bore zx10 and a big bore zx12. 1290-1070= 120 cc's a rough approximation of 12 hp all other things being equal(fuzzy math). Obviously if there is an advantage it'll be in the torque department.

I'm looking forward to attempting this project and appreciate your advice.

the way HP & torque is developed makes a huge difference

more HP spred out of ore rpm does hit like it does in just a few RPM

the emgo team suzuki 1100 on the back straight at road atlanta
you could actually see the chassis compressing & releasing

biganski had a 350 yamaha that had more HP than god
it looked like a 3 legged coon dog tryin to take a crap & screw at the same time running

all having a problem of tooooooo much HP that most racers wish they had that problkem
yet most racers will tell you if you cant lay it down.....you aint goin fast

handling reigns

ask spiderman...................he still has more HP than he can use
