difference in Pc3 and Pc3r

PC web site says that the pc3r has the ability to change ignition timing it does this with a special wiring harness. I have both a pc3 and pc3r in front of me and they have the exact same wiring harness. Is there possibly more than one version of the pc3r ? hmm that doesnt make sense seeing that they made both models at the same time.

Reason for asking this is I had a map in the bike that was for a pc3r meaning that the ignition timing was advanced. Problem was I had a pc3 in at the time so the timing wouldnt have been advanced and the bike never really ran any better. Before I put the pc3r in I just want to make 100% sure that this will read the map I have and advance timing so it will run correctly.

The PC3r and an extra or at least 1 ground wire. The PC3r is more prone to map corruption than the PC3

PC3 and PC3R can use the same maps.
The R should use the timing table where the PC3 will only used the fuel table.
There should be 1 extra ground wire for the 3R.

ok im good to go then Vince I was running the map you gave me on the pc3 never even thought about ignition timing Im guessing that map will work allot better with the increase in timing.

PCiiir here for 8 years. No problems, and tweaking the timing does affect performance and HP.

vincent hit the nail on the head

many a PC3 or PC3r were sent back because they kept "dumping" maps

either the programs were weak or corruptible

guys would install them....program them

they would work a little while............................sometimes folks couldnt discern
any improvement

many times they ended up with negative results & sometimes they would simply stop working altogether

good luck

AMEN to the above! Nothing like getting the timing +20 degreees or even Minus 20 degrees! You may not feel the Hiccup but you will see on the Graph where the engine stops running for a 100 of a second! The only tim I ever fell over on the bike with Peggy was in Daytona and the Map went to hell! I went to Daytona Daves House where we re-programed the PC3r (ALso this was the NEWER one with the small wires around the wires for less interference) I gave my pc3r to a friend and never looked back!

There were problems with some of the early Power Commanders. According to the company, many failures were caused by faulty installations i.e.wire bundles installed so wires rubbed raw and shorted out, and bad or faulty ground connections. In my other life, I was a Boeing flight line electrician, and when trouble shooting electrical problems, the ground would be the first thing I'd check.
