so how am i supposed to know how tight or loose my chain should be once i swap out
sprockets?

The tension is the same regardless. Rule of thumb is between two to three fingers. But the shop manual gives you the measurement. I usually run about an inch and a quarter.

You should sit on the bike when making the final adjustment.
You dont want it too tight, otherwise it hinders your suspension travel.
Have a friend or competitor, like ZRXChris, make the final adjustments with you loading the suspension!
