I think the bike looks *cheap* without one.
You can use BelRay Superclean chain lube to keep the sprocket/chain area clean. It doesnt fling at all!

I would never ride without one and I dont like riding behind someone that has taken theirs off. Ever see a chain come flying off when it breaks??

Thanks TB!

Of course, this is an old photo and now the swingarm is black (covered in black reflective material). If you'll notice, the counter sprocket cover is also removed. There still is a metal "guard" that goes around the counter sprocket that keeps it from bunching up and cracking the case, in case of a chain break.
Since I don't drag race (where a guard is often required), I'm not too worried about it. On the other hand, they don't care on open track days.
I did throw a chain on my similarly "unguarded" 7R and it didn't cause a problem (besides being briefly stranded). Lucky? Who knows? Having the additional "guard" (what's under the plastic cover) gives me enough peace of mind.
Though it may look "cheap", I much prefer it to the look of a hugger, which I really think looks... nevermind. I ain't going there.

My '02 PMB does not have a chainguard currently either. I think that the plastic stock chainguard looks horrible next to the rest of the well-finished bike, and I haven't found a suitable hugger/chainguard replacement yet. The stock gold chain definitely compliments my stock colors, IMHO. BTW, if a chain does break, I can't imagine that a flimsy piece of plastic held on by 3 10mm screws is going to do much to slow it down. JMHO.

While we're on the subject....is the stock chain good enough or are there better ones worth upgrading to? I dont wheelie or do any tricks, I just ride a lot.
