I'd have to say if the cops get a report of someone shooting a gun and you fit the description, you're gonna be treated like you have a gun, and they should appologize and you should accept it when you are not the one they are looking for. Anything beyond SOP should piss you off.
I find it amazing that SOP could remain inside their heads with the adrenaline rush of "armed man" going through their minds. But I guess that's why they practice.

...I can see it now....some citzen in bed hears some yelling, like..."hey grab that pussy!"...then he hears a struggle other yelling, like..."let me go!"..."the pussy...grab that pussy!"..."let my pussy go!!!!"...then the citizen dials 911 and reports some husky voiced woman's being assaulted...send the cops!...hey, it could happen....it apparently did, sort of:

223 and big ju, I'm glad to have you out there.
Stange Cops and stange dogs are alike. When you see them
coming it's time to run if you can, Fight if you have to.
Not all cops are bad, not all runners are bad.
Last ticket(seat belt) i recieved was from a punk maybe 25-30 yrs old, i'm 40.
He gave me so many orders it you would have thought it was a felony stop.
Get back in the car. close the door. let the window down. turn the radio down. give me your license, take the keys out the switch.
I was standing 5 feet from him with license in hand, Why all the bull?
Guess i should be happy i didn't get cuffed face down in the street.
Am i the only one that still turn off when a cop is around.

...ninja12..like bigju said, unless you've walked in the shoes, there's no way you can know how a man/woman thinks when they're on duty and doing the job...look, I'm not here to bash anyone for their opinions, but I'd lke to have equal opportunity to help educate and maybe explain why we do the things we do in the manner that we do them to the fine folks at this site (hmmm...lots of doo doos, huh? )
...anyways...when we get slammed (ooh, bad pun ) by the viewing public (who, by the way, get ample time and opportunity to think about and critique our actions while 'we' only have a few seconds, if even that, to make a decision to take certain action) because of how we handled an incident, lots of times its beause the public isn't aware of what's happening up close and personal, how we're trained, and what goes on in our minds as we're doing the job...its even worse when the media shows only part of what happened and inflames the public...
...I can tell you one thing, though (and just about guarantee it)...if I took you off the street right now, gave you some basic training on what to do and what not to do, and deputized you to be my partner for a shift...when we're presented with a simple traffic stop, and the subject starts lipping off and starts reaching for things without your permission...I can just about guarantee that you'll talk to the subject the way the cop talked to you...nothing personal to the person being stopped, mind you, but its just that you'd want to control the environment so that you can get done with the stop unscathed and go home at the end of the shift...
...if you're presented with a volatile and combative subject, I can almost guarantee that you'll do whatever it takes to come out on top to not get hurt, maimed, or killed...what you do to that volatile and combative subject will appear violent in the eyes of the public, but what you do will keep you alive...and that's with the basic training combined with your good common sense...when you tell the subject to stop resisting, most of them will not...most of them are looking, waiting for you to relax just a bit so that they can take advantage of that moment to hurt you and get away from you...
...I can hear the "not all people are violent" talk, but you have to realize that we usually don't know what's going on in a person's mind when we contact them...some of the best dressed, well mannered, and calmest people have hurt or killed a few cops on the spot doing their job...and the cop didn't have time to react cuz he's/she's balancing his/her method of doing the job and trying to stay alive without pissing off the public...an a person's age (not including most juveniles) is a non-issue...neither is gender...
...even in practice/training scenerios, you'll either freeze up, do the wrong thing, or do the right thing...we've all done it as fresh-faces in the academy...imagine the real stuff...you'd certainly want to keep the mistakes down to a minimum...it could cost you your life...
...now I know that we all handle situations differently based on our personalities and experience, but ultimately its about controlling the situation...and this applies to just about any profession, no?
...its not an easy job...its not for everybody...the stress of a critical incident can be infinitely tremendous....try doing this for 20+ years...try going up to or into an unknown, potentially deadly person or situation at least five to ten times a day, four times a week for 20+ years...
...there was a study that a high number of cops who retire after 20+ years on the job die within five years of retirement...I think it has to do with the 20 years of constant up and down adrenalin stress...then there's nothing...the body doesn't know what to do with all the calm...something's gotta pop...
...me? ...I have ten more years to go and I'll retire when I'm 58...that'll give me a total of 25 years on the job (five as a military cop)...too young to die just like that...that's why I'll always need to ride a motorcycle...ironically (hopefully ) the inherent danger and adrenalin rush of motorcycling will keep me alive for a long, long time with a healthy supply of adrenalin...give my body something to do besides shuffleboard
...so you do the best you can...and so it goes...

Worm~hole, reading the last two paragraphs of your post made me chuckle. Cops dying soon after retirement? NO! Of course not! What I found humorous was the weird similarity between retired (and even off duty) cops and recovering addicts. I can't speak for the cops, but I can speak for myself as a recovering addict (4 years crystal meth w/P2P, 3 1/2 years crack and close to 6 years in "the program").
It's often said that a recovering addict will always be of the "addict mentality", even when they are not "active" with their previous drug of choice. They tend to look for a "cross addiction". One that's more socially acceptable then the previous drug of choice, but often, just barely "socially acceptable". This new "drug of choice" has to have, in the mind of the addict, that same "rush" as their previous choice.
This new choice will be persued with the exact same reckless abandon as the previous choice, but in the eyes of society, that pursuit will be viewed as at "tad obsessive" instead of just "some guy fuckin' up his life". It's funny that my cross addiction shares both the chacteristics for my previous choice and slightly mimics that of the mentality of an off duty or retired law enforcement officer.
There's that "flirtation with personal harm" (aka "deathwish") as on finds themselves violating a few traffic laws. This is just an emotional replacement for putting on the kevlar vest and getting into that squad car OR folding that aluminum foil just right and preparing to "chase the dragon" with some meth (I bet you'd never imagine such a "comparison", huh?).
PLEASE, I mean NO OFFENSE to you or any other officer by making this comparison, I understand that were talking "apples and blue jeans" here, but since you have dealt with both (cops and addicts), you can not deny this strangly common train of thought.
The maticulous preperation of how you prepare for work and how you prepare for a ride has little difference, doesn't it? How you ensure the proper operation of your weapon and even how you care for your K9 partner isn't that far removed from how you treat your bike before a spirited ride, is it?
That "thrill", that "rush", of going through an apex at twice the posted, knowing that you did everything just perfect... gives you a similar satisfaction as if you just aprehended a suspect. The training. The skills. The culmation of years of experience. It all shows and pays off in that one moment of emense satisfaction. It's almost sexual.
Again, I apologize for the comparison between the mentality of cops and addicts. It's just that since I work with cops about as much as you work with addicts, I think that even you can see the humorously similarity between the two's way of prusuing the objectives with an obsessive nature.
I also think that by the both of us riding sportbikes (at a spirited and maybe even an "illegal" pace), it keeps both of us sane and grounded. Something that is both good for us and little do they know, but for society as well. Call it therapy, obsession, stress releif or even addiction... without it, I don't think society would be very happy with either of us.
Yeah... YEAH! For the benefit and general safety of the society at large, there outta be a law that says that cops and addicts can do what ever the need (want) on sportbikes to releive their.... nevermind.

Redelk: no apologies needed or warranted....I DO see the apples and blue jeans similarities...I never really thought of the comaprison until you enlightened me...but it won't make me go soft on the people who hurt others and blame it on their "dangerous addictions"...sportbikes...drugs...cop action...the differences are that some are accepted (more or less) and some are not )obviously)...we still need to be responsible for our own actions and addictions...people need to know when to say no, ya know?...I know I'm gonna miss this job that I love to hate sometimes when I retire...but at least I'll be able to function with my own ZX-12-Step "program" till the end of my days...
ninja12: Thanks, man...and I think the people here are cool, too....othwerwise I'd hang out somewhere else...I just like to convey that not all cops are dickheads, just as we all know that not all citizens are dickheads...even the ones speeding on their sportbikes...we all reap what we sow, no?...we're like a 'family' with all the thorns and roses thrown in the bunch for good measure...like most families, we have sibling rivalries, bickering, misunderstandings, different opinions, and even the occassional 'black sheep' who says the wrong things in everybody's eyes...we also have the tremendous support when we need it, even from the mean ones (imagine that!!! ...makes me think they're not as bad-ass as they make themselves out to be on the internet )...the elders teach the young ones, and vice versa...all in all, I'd say its all good...
be safe!

the whole cop thing is a question that's battled itself in my head many times over, and despite realizing all the issues in the cop's defense, such as the need to control the situation and teh danger of the person flippin out, i still end up concluding that the majority of cops i'v dealt with were assholes to some degree. despite several of them givin me the usual line about not wanting to see me get hurt, not one of them said it convincingly. maybe i just cant read the mentality/personality of a cop due to it being very different from the average person, i dont know. but it's always come across like "see i'm a good guy who cares for u, so dont argue w me or try to dispute the ticket". it doesnt help that we had a tenant in whistler who was a cop, & she fit the stereotype that most people here complain about exactly. she abused her power and seemed to be in the job for no other reason than the power.
now one thing i have always tried to remind myself of in regard to getting tickets etc, is that a cop is not an asshole just because he/she gave me a ticket. almost every time (except once i think), i kept telling myself the old mantra about "this ticket wasnt called for. i wasnt doing anything dangerous". & i firmly beleive that was always true. but i have to remember that doesnt make the issuer an asshole. it may not have been dangerous, but fact is it was against the law and the officer's job is to uphold the law. rather than think "asshole" about that cop, i should think "thank you, u absolute saint!" whenever a cop lets me go. now i'v never been let go from a stop, ever, but there have been a few occasions where i blew by a cop & they didnt bother tryin to stop me. really, i owe alot to that cop for endangering his own job by letting me by. now some may say that the cop just didnt feel like chasin me, and i'm sure that was sometimes true. and that makes me mad cause it means the cop really doesnt believe in his job or feel duty to his responsibilities. but i suspect that was usually not the case. at least one time i flew by a cop at 300kph and he didnt chase, even those it was in the middle of nowhere with zero chance of escaping. if it were a cop who just loved the power, he woulda got an instant woody seein me blow by. i believe the cop jsut realized that i wasnt putting anyone other than myself in danger and let me have my fun.
another thought i have in defense of cops is that i believe we expect too much of them. we expect them to be brave in teh face of extreme danger, put our lives ahead of theirs without even knowing us, be rough and tumble enough to subdue pretty much anyone, yet act like a fuckin social worker. come to think of it, cops do have to work as social workers on many a domestic calls. when is the last time u saw a social worker chase & tackle a armed murderer? we don't expect soldiers to be al nicey nice, why cops? their jobs r in many ways the same. i guess this recent media blitz about the cop who punched the kid after he was in handcuffs at the gas station is a perfect example of our inhuman inpectations. a perp (for lack of a better word) can run from and fight a cop all he wants and we really dont say anything about that, if anything maybe "hey, the cop knows what he's gettin in to". but the cop lands one blow in revenge, and the whole country screams in protest. shit, if u caught someone stealin ur bike, wouldnt u give him a few kicks after he's down? or in a bar fight? sure ya would. why shouldnt the cop? cause we hodl them to higher standards. unfortunately if we only chose people who met those standards, we'd have just about enough police to patrol disneyland.
having said that, i believe i AM in the right to expect a cop to be civil. ie, dont start yellin at me about how i piss people off by passin them and just generally talkin down to me, treatin me like shit. u are not a lawmaker, u are a law enforcer. i'v fortunately only dealt with one cop who actually yelled at me, and on top of it i believe he was outside hsi authority to even stop me, cause he didnt give me a ticekt, wasnt in proepr uniform, and was in what appeared to be a non-police issue vehicle, even tho it had a single light inside. frankly, i'm not sure he was even a cop, in which case he did a HUGE diservice to cops everywhere.
finally, i suspect cops get a bad rap cause most of our interaction is with traffic cops. from what i'v always heard, those are either new cops, or those that couldnt make it any higher. so u r by default dealin with the bottom of the barrel. no different when u go to a store normally. u go to buy something, most of the staff is ill-mannered, doesnt know the answers to half the questions u ask, and are generally hard to talk to cause they'r so...average. but talk to the manager or some executives from the chain, chances r they are relatively smart, very well mannered and personable, and know pretty much every answer (obviously there r plenty of exceptions).
oh yeah, what i REALLY hate in traffic cops in particular, is that every second one of them claims that they ride 2 when they pull ya over, like they'r tryin to form some kind of kinship. got news for ya buddy, having owned an old jalopy of a bike fer 1 year when u were 22 and riding it 1000kms over the whole summer, goin to the gym and back, DOESNT MAKE U A RIDER!!! the aforementioned tenant was one of those. she owned a cracked up ex500 (in worse shape than my bike *shudder*). she road it once a month, and not very far or hard by the looks of things. for that matter, she never even talked about her bike, even when i tried to ask her about it once. just didnt really care about bikes. ok, so maybe i'm bein a bit of a biker snob here, but that really pisses me off!

frEEK...you will never know the whys and hows of what a cop does until your sworn to be a cop...from the very forst moment you put on that uniform on your very first day on patrol, on yor very first stop, you will see how the some citizens precieve you...most will be apprehenive cuz they know they're busted, some will be calm and act as if they've done nothing wrong, and some will be somewhat or very hostile, even if they know they did do something wrong...and you, all the newbie rookie cop of you will react to the citizen based on how you've been trained, what you've been told, your life's experiences with people, and your own personality...I'd venture to say that if it went even slightly sour, even YOU will be surprised of your own reaction...all on your very first day on your very first stop...
I can understand your frustration...I can even understand why you'd feel/think this way...I think its because you don't quite understand what its like to do the job that we do...if you could do a ride-along with one of your finest, you might get a glimpse of how even the nicest cops have to get nasty...either verbally or physically...especially when there's even the slightest hint of the subject becoming hostile...all that to be in control of the situation, to be safe, and to stay alive...this is for most professional cops who do their jobs in a professional manner...
here's one of the the ironies of the job: if you DON'T get a smile, don't get mad, its nothing personal... if you DO get a smile, don't get mad, its nothing personal....hmmm...go figure

First thing one learns in recovery... "it's you, babe!". No one held a gun to my head and the fourth step sucks! So does the fifth step for that matter! All part of the "game", man. To get "right", ya gotta do it "right". I'm the only one responsible for getting there and I'm the only one that can get me out. There ain't no such thing as an "easier, gentler way".
I remember when I managed an AMA Enduro team, when ever they started whining and moaning about BS stuff happenin' in their personal lives, I used to always tell them, "You where you are because you want to be there.". In other words, if your both physically and mentally able (even "marginally"), you can pull yourself outta just about any depth of shit you have got yourself into. The part that sucks is that one does not get into "the shit" overnight and guess what... One ain't gonna get out of it overnight either. If one thinks that "life" is like that (easy to get out of "the shit"), "life" has a short and sweet reply... "Tough shit! It ain't happenin'!".
Some folks just don't get it. Knowing way too many folks the ended their time here on terra firma, for the most stupidest and tragically sad reasons, it makes me just happy to have another opportunity to hear the alarm clock in the morning. Seeing how for them, they'll never hear the alarm clock again, all the crap I have to deal with during the day is just "gravy" in comparison. Or like my sponsor says, "better them then me. I'd rather learn from their fuck-ups then the other way around.". Pretty simple, if you ask me.
