PC III USB on a used bike!
I'm the first to say that I know very little about bike and car mechanics. However I'm learning as I go along. This bike has really been a great learning experience for me. This forum has been the biggest help!
I just got my "00" 12 and it has a PC III usb unit on it. It has a Yosh slip on on it. The bike seems to run fine (maybe a little rich) but I was wondering how to go about changing the map if I ever needed to. Do I need to get soft ware to do this? Also how do I know I have the correct mapping? I know this my seem like a Squid question but if I don't ask I'll never know!
Thanks!

All of us here (Except Doug Meyer) Started out stupid so there are NO Stupid questions.
You need a laptop and a USB Cable that comes with the PC3. Also down load the program to read the PC3. Then hook up the USB and down load the map and see what the map number is and then look at their web site to see what it is for. If no numbers then it is a custom map or just no real map!

do what i've done and hook up the cable and just leave it in the bike coiled up with a twist tie. it is so much nicer to have the cable ready to go everytime you change the map instead of fishing it out and trying to get the little mini usb end in

Or you can remove the PC because the 12 doesnt need it with a stock motor that has a slip-on or full race exhaust !!!
I just have a full pipe without a PC on my 2002 12...
Save yourself $$$ and wasted time by just removing it...

thats the most retarded thing i've ever read on this board to date. if you change the way the air flows (exhaust, filters, etc...) then you have to modify the fuel. these bikes are closed loop. any bike, even if its stock, will benefit from a power commander and dyno tune, especially if you're at any altitude other than sea level.
of course the bike will technically still run, its just a matter of if you're ok running effed up and eating up your motor

I completely agree ....... years of working on carbed bikes shows that tuning a completely stock bike to riding habits and locations will ALWAYS have benifits.

May sound retarded to you and you may completely agree but I still disagree...
What you really need to do is tune yourself into the capabilities of your bike, especially the 12, learn the power of the 12 and why...The 12 is fuel injected not carbureted, and less is more!!!
I have learned that the ZX12s run rich, so put a pipe on it, makes more power and still ok with the fuel and air ratio...
One thing a tuner wont tell you because he wont make any $$$ off you selling a PC and dynoing your 12 for you...By the way try to find a dyno guy that will let you watch him tune your bike, if so then it's not a waste of $$$...GOOD LUCK !!!
Unless your in the mountains, then you may get special care in tunning...
Sure tunning will always produce 2-3 more horse power on a stock 12 but at what price and are you racing it in a Pro Racing Series or Grudge Racing where every bit of horse power is needed ???

Thanks Vince, still, sometimes I amaze myself with my stupidity, but I working on eradicating it.
Having said that, let me correct something Almost Les said - The ZX-12 is not a "closed loop" F.I. system. Closed Loop refers to a system that monitors the exaust gas (02 sensor) and modifies the fuel flow continuously to maintain the desired A/F ratio. The 12 is a "speed density" system that reads the speed of the engine and the density and temperature of the incomingair, then calculates wich cell in a pre-wriiten "map" to select for the fuel value. As our Japanese race mechanics used to say "Not Same."
On the PC, my opinion is that it's a very good tool to optimize your bike with even the smallest mods, but certainly not a necessity with most slip-on or bolt-on exhausts.

Doug
never heard it called "speed density"
it guess i always thought of it as open loop becuase in the modern vehicles i work when they are in open loop they are doing what you describe as "speed density"

So just to re visit my original question. All I have to do is look on the slip on as to what it is. then go to dyno jet's site and find the correct mapping for the year of the bike and pipe. Down load it to my laptop. Then hook it up to the PC usb and I'm good to go?
I don't need a Disc or soft ware or special codes etc....?
Sorry if this is a stupid question! I'm still learning!

You will need to load some powercomander software to run on your laptop then you will need to decide which map to load based on your exact bike and mods. This map will be a great base line to start with.......

i just researched it, i was wrong and had the two swItched (cuz i'm smart like that)
open loop being a typical bike (aka speed-density), closed being a typical car using O2 sensor(s)
and i do live in the mountains. our rides often end up in the 8000+ altitude range and last time at the strip (4225' actual) was a corrected 9000'
chango- power commander software:
http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander_iii_usb/powercommander_general_downloads.aspx
look for the software near the bottom of the page
see if you can find any local guys running the same or similar setup as you and try their maps first. odds are they've already found the one that works.

Thanks!!!! I'm going to take a look at the slip on and find out exactly which map to go with!
