Idle is getting rough...

Reposting from LABusas.org...

I have a 2003 zx-12r with 5300 miles.
It has full Akro with PCII usb. The map is excellent; no flat spots or stumbles. Bike flat hauls when I want it to.
Ive owned it for 2 months and put 2000 miles on it in that time.

I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that the idle is getting rough, and I have to fiddle with the mixture screw to keep it around 1K rpms; especially when cold, but even on a hot restart. Bike still runs great under throttle.

What is going on? What needs to be tweeked or replaced?
Can anyone help me out? The FSM hasn't revealed much.

Can you be a little more specific/descriptive on what you mean by "rough"?

this may sound crazy but check for rust in your tank.

Guys, I appreciate the responses.

Sorry I haven't gotten back, but I've been way too busy at work.

When it starts, the RPMs are signifigantly lower than 1K, it sounds like a Harley; this is what I mean about a 'rough idle'. I have to use the fast idle to make adjustments.

Seems to be getting even worse because, when I started the bike (full choke) this morning for the commute, it died twice. This hasn't happened before.

I need to look at my map to see if it has corrupted as suggested above.

I keep the gas tank full if parked for more than a few days, so I don't think it's rust.

turn the idle screw in... idle the bike around 1400 rpm. oil pressure is scary low at 1k

Well i was having idle issues of it revving really low, and sputtering and dieing, but it only actually died when cold. When hot i was having alot of surging at idle, and if i were to rev it to say 4k it fluctuated alot. Syncing my throttle bodies did the trick for me. I was having a hard sputter at low rpm before that and plugs solved it.

I'd start with the cheap options and work your way up lol.

Some food for thought:

Your fast idle is not a "choke" it does not effect A/F, only throttle position.
Have you checked your idle stop screw? Could someone have messed with it?
Is that what you're referring to as "the mixture screw"? There is no mixture screw, only
air bypass screws on each throttle body (normally sealed off).
Check all the small hoses from the throttle body spigots. Any pinched or off?
Is the KLEEN air injection system intact? Any hoses off?
What is your battery voltage at idle? Anything less than 12.5 or so at idle is not good. this can allow the plugs to foul.
Check the plugs. If they are sooty, idle can suffer.
Like KZ said, raise the idle a bit. I like 1200.
Doug

Thanks for the additional suggestions.

I rechecked the map this afternoon; there wasn't any difference between my master copy and the bike copy. I downloaded a new map from PowerCommander; loaded it in, revved the bike a couple of times. Idle sounded a little better, and then I reloaded my master copy. Not sure if anything really changed, I'll find out in the morning and post the results.

The battery is less than a month old. I will have to check it for myself at idle.

I will increase the idle rpms to 1200, also.

I have thought about getting the valve adjustment done early; the bike has 5400 miles.

is the low idle really that big of an issue? I've not been able to find anymore info on this topic. I had mine set to idle about 800. and it sits there stable and happily. but am i raping my motor? lol

No. People tend to get freaked out when they put a guage on the bike and see the low oil pressure. It's quite normal and the loads are so light that no harm is done at idle. Pretend you didn't hear about it and you'll be fine.
