Good Question which can change with Cam timing. I want 0.060 intake and 0.080 on the exhaust I am afraid of less than 0.040. More is Better. Remember I have a Low compression engine closer to a Turbo engine and my clearance is even more!
There is a little Bounce in the valve that you cannot measure and there is a little leaping of the piston at TDC which you also cannot measure. The one valve I am most afraid of is the Exhaust because the piston is trying to meet it before it closes (WHich I have had happen on a few occassions
On my 2 valve KZ1000 race engine I could sometimes see the Pattern where the carbon was "Dusted" from the top of the piston at the end of a long race. That caused me to start using a manual cam chain tensioner

So Vincent, what was your method of checking it? did i read and old post saying that you put solder thru the plug hole?

ONLY on the "2" Valve engines! The 4 valve engines (even with the Soft hollow core solder may hurt the valves (Do not ask)
Now I am like everyone else using a Used head gasket and Modeling Clay (A Small dab) on Each and every Piston Pocket (Again I have found that this also checks the Pistons because even with the Same valve clearance the Pistons can be slightly different along with the Height of the Valve seat! There is a LOT of things that can effect the clearance and never Assume that what you have on one will be the same on ANY Other Piston!!
I have had to take the head on and off Sevral times and it gets tiring!

Also after putting a small dab of Modeling Clay on each piston valve pocket also put a drop of Oil on the also to make sure they do not stick to the Valve.
Depending on when I posted about that soft hollow core solder I tried that about 2003 and discovered that it is Possible to bend a valve slightly! The stuff I was using I could Shew with my teeth so I was Surprized!! so for when I made major changes in 2005 I went back to the "Old" Ways!
My next test may be to use a thin piece of Safety wire with a dab of Clay but then the wire could get caught up between the valve head and the seat! Just no easy way I know of right now!

I KNOW what they do! He depresses the Valve and uses a dial indicator to see what the clearances is! I have all of the Dial Indicators in the world but no "EASY" way to depress the Valves without having light springs! That covers all of the problems!

im still not exactly sure how its done, but i was thinking about using 1 piece of a stock EX valve...
my motor should be back together tonight with gapped rings(thx for the numbers JC) and im borrowing a dial indicator and degree wheel tomorrow to set cam timing, and hopefully ill be able to check ptv
