Bike Question/Help

If anyone can help, or has experienced this problem before, it would be greatly apprieciated.

I have an 00' zx-12r, that has a little over 30K on it. I haven't had any real trouble with it, and have been pleased. This past weekend I was riding with some buddies, and they flagged me down to let me know smoke was coming from underneath the passenger seat. I immediately pulled over and shut the bike off. The smoke stopped, and I took the rear fairings off to see if anything burned. There was a strong electrical burn smell, but no visible damage. Since we didn't find anything, we kinda shrugged our shoulders and proceeded on with our journey with no more problems. This moring, I went to start my bike, and nothing. Instrument panels wouldn't light up. I figured my battery was dead. I tried to jump the bike and I got a little juice, just faint lights and horn, and some ticking from the starter. The cables got very hot, so I just disconnected before I caused some damage. I did have another weird experience the previous ride I just recall. I was in some traffic,so I would shut my bike off intermittently to keep it cool. Normally, I could just start my bike back up in first of second gear and pull off, but I couldn't do it this time. I could only start it in neutral. That problem went away too. Weird. I wonder if I am having an electrical problem.

Has anyone experienced this before, or know what the cause could be?

charging system from the left side of motor is a well documented problem on the early zx12s. follow that wire to the connection under the seat. Oil and burned wires are usually found in the wire and connector.

There is a service letter/recall on this. Go to Kawasaki.com and search. Nothing to mess with, get it fixed.

Thanks. I'll check for the recall. I guess that would explain the no power situation.

Hey Doug. I searched the kawasaki website to no avail. I put in my vin #, and it came up with nothing regarding the charging problem. I will try and call them in the morning, but in the meantime, do you know exactly where that info is? i would like to do some research on it, so I can at least have somewhat of an intelligent conversation with them. Thanks

its the wires coming from the stator. the plug burns up in the tail section as oil gets up thru the wires and raises the resistance

would that cause no electrical power, or a dead battery?

the big problem - year 00 /01 ---- the alternator plugs on the left side under the back seat !!

into the wires -- there comes oil from the alteranor to the plugs !! and then it burns !!!

kawasaki has to fix it !!!!! do that as fast as possible !!! have seen a zx12r which burns down --- because of this problem !!!

Kawasaki.com - owner info - recalls - Enter your VIN
I don't have a VIN handy to check and see if it works but I have done it in the past

Thanks guys. I will take my bike to the dealer. Couldn't get on it yesterday. Very busy at work. I am pretty sure that is what it is, since the smoke was coming from under the seat.

Doug - I did put my vin # in, and it says I have no outstanding recalls on my bike, that is why I was confused. BTW - several years ago, you gave me a map off your personal bike for my PCiiir. I still use it, and have blown many other bikes away with it! Again, thanks for your help. I am indebted to you.

Woppi - That was exactly the problem. Thanks for the detail. Now I will sound informed when I go to the dealer.
