OIL LEAK!! MAY HAVE CAUSED ME TO CRASH

I OWN A 2001 ZX12. I HAVE RECENTLY STARTED DOING STAND UP WHEELIES, IF I DO A STAND-UP FOR SAY A 1/2 MILE OR MORE, OIL SUCKS UP IN THE AIR BOX, THE BIKE STARTS SMOKIN' THEN THE EXCESS OIL IN THE AIRBOX, LEAKS OUT AND MAKES A HUGE PUDDLE ON THE GROUND. ALSO THE VENT TUBE FOR THE AIRBOX DRAINS IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE. I NEED TO KNOW IF THERE IS A FIX FOR THIS, AND NOT DOING ANY WHEELIES ARE OUT OF THE QUESTION, WHICH IS KAWASAKI'S FIX...

You gotta wonder what part of the motor isn't getting the oil that's in the airbox...

NO SHIT, WE CALLED KAWASAKI AND ASKED THE " TECHS " ABOUT THE PROBLEM, THERE REPLY " FILL THE CRANKCASE TO SPEC WITH OIL, RIDE 50 MILES WITH BOTH WHEELS ON THE GROUND, LET US KNOW IF THE OIL IS STILL GETTING IN THE AIRBOX OR LEAKING OUT. " KAWASAKI'S ANSWER.....KEEP BOTH TIRES ON THE GROUND, AND YOU WONT LOSE ANY OIL.... I DIDNT WANT TO OWN A BORING BIKE KAWASAKI !!!!!

You could buy a Ducati and have it stop running due to oil starvation. Only the 998R is capable of long wheelies without oil starvation. The Aprilia Mille is a dry sump and can wheelie until Hell freezes over and not have oil starvation.

My experience with the 12 is long wheelies do not necesarily mean oil in the airbox, however long wheelies with the engine rpms at or near redline will pump oil into the box.

I wouldn't consider the 12 to be a stunt bike. What bike or bikes have you been riding without any issues?

Ducati oil starvation

Zhooligan, was concerned when I read your posting stating that the 998R could be wheelied without suffering from oil starvation.

NO DUCATI CAN BE WHEELIED FOR LONG PERIODS WITHOUT SUFFERING SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE FRONT VALVE GEAR/CAMS ETC.

The oil pressure in the feed lines to the heads is at a relatively low pressure and requires a constant pickup from the sump, if the bike is wheelied for a long period, or repeatedly then the visible sign is oil coming out of the crank case breather and making it's way onto the rear tyre (which is nice!) but the damage you cannot see is the chroming coming of the cams and follower forks and shortening the life of your engine.

I raced a 748 and 916 at national level in the UK, and currently wrench for a national pro-stock 998 rider.

Not having a go me old mucker, but if you have a 998 or any one reading has one didn't want there to be a very expensive misunderstanding. Quite frankly while dukes are great bikes in many respects, they are a pain in the arse as far as the mechanics of the engine are concerned!

I agree about them being a pain. The articles about the 998R have all pointed out the difference in the oil sump of the Rover that of the standard 998 or 998S, and that it prevents oil starvation. Superbike and Performance bike both talked about this as they tend to be hooligans!! So if that is not the case I am misinformed and bow to your expertise. I am certain of the Mille and Mille R. Mine has been wheelied for well over a mile on numerous occasions and the dry sump has never been a problem.

I do have to say that it is highly unlikely that any of the bilkes will fair well with relentless wheelies, time and time again.

The crankcase vent hose is in the rear of the pan. When you wheelie, you cover up the hose in oil, causing it to suck it up. You might could shorten the length of the hose to lessen the problem.

not to be a wise ass, but you might put the little plastic catch bottle back on the end of the airbox drain tube. at least then oil wouldn't get on the ground...

I was thinking the same thing. My hose has the bottle and a plug on the end of the tube to prevent fluids from coming out in front of the tire. Also, my bottle is bone dry.

Did you follow the breakin rules for your 12? -ZXtra

hey Stoney,
if you have the catch bottle in place and the bottom has the cap on it, you better look and see where yr oil is coming from, eh??
