oil light on when level is fine

What`s up with this? The light comes on and flickers occasionally when the level is fine.

Any ideas?

look at the connection on the oil pressure sensor, might be corroded/faulty

It's a OIL PRESSURE light, not oil volume.
Hopefully the wire on the sensor is loose.
It's on the lower left side of the bike with one wire going to it held by a phillips screw.
The zx12 is know for low pressure with low idle speed , below 1000.

Otherwise it could be a sign that a bearing is about to let go.

Check the pick up............, if you have been going through clutches, the fibers have to go somewhere............

Hopefully it is the loose wire.........

Turn the idle up to 1500...............

Good point to pass on NOX.
Alot of people idle bikes way down so they won't clunck as bad when engaging first gear from neutral but...........the oil pressure is very, very low at below 1,000 rpm..

Hey thanks everyone. I will check the lead.

No oil change recently. The light just started flickering. Not at idle either. It will just start flickering when I am riding, even at 3000-4000 rpm or higher. Then it will go away, not to come back for a while. Wierd.

Sounds like a wire connection issue

OK, OK.... It`s the wire.... I hope.

Does the fairing have to come off to get at it?

OK.

I checked the wire connection. It looked alright, so I cleaned it up and put it back together. No better.

So, I went to my local Kawi dealer and they seem to think it`s the sensor itself thats at fault. It`s a 21 dollar part so I will replace it and see what that does.

I want to believe it`s the sensor, but......

UPDATE!!!

I replaced the oil pressure sensor with a new one as my dealer suggested.

The light still comes on occasionally, but not as much. Now what? Do I have a big problem?

*2 things.

-the wire that connects to the sensor looks very thin, frail and exposed. Maybe it needs to be reattached?!

-I just changed the oil trying to solve this problem, but did not change the filter. I bought the bike last fall, and do not know the last time the filter was changed. Could an old and possibly partially plugged filter be the problem?!

I am starting to get nervous.......

I've been nervous for you since your first post. Put a gauge on it and figure it out before you hurt it! Just get a good gauge with a good lower scale resolution, use the largest line you can from a fitting where the switch is and tape the gauge up where you can see it. Things like this and most others are almost never instrument error.

is the light coming on just at idle??? like at 1000rpm???

i don't know if it would make a difference, but try the filter change. pretty cheap "experiment"

i always change the filter with an oil change, don't know if it is necessay, but it makes me feel better

like doug says, put a guage on it, real easy to do.

I will round up a guage and check it.

So, if it`s low on the guage, then what? Oil pump replacement? Any ideas?

(by the way, thanks for the help)

Do the oil and filter change first. Use a K&N filter and good quality synthetic oil, 10/40 wt and see if the light comes on. When I purchased my '04, on the first ride the oil pressure light came on. I changed the switch, cleaned the connection ( although it didn't need cleaning) and all was well. Has never come on since. If you really have low pressure its got to be the pump unless you have an obstruction somewhere which is very unlikely.

That`s another question. My 01 ZX12 has 24000 miles on it. What weight oil should I run? Still 10/40?
