Dr. Doug, My Question is what do "YOU" think about having a Motorcycle with the front and rear wheel "Offset" from each other? WOuld you make a Motorcycle with this feature for Road Race? Personally I think it was done for Expediency since the Handling is not Horrible. If you had a bike where the rear wheel was Offset to the right by 1/2 inch would you leave it that way or space it over to the left and align the Sprockets with a offset sprocket?

If I could make it symmetrical, I would.
Unless of course I was biasing the setup for a track with all the turns in the same direction!
I've never ridden a dirt tracker or know much about the setup on them but I wouldn't be surprised if that's been tried a time or two.
We do that in cars all the time. A circle track car will barely turn to the right. You have to hold it straight or it will go left all on it's own.

quote: zrexpilot,
I think when you say "lining up with the front" you are referring to centerlines, right?
If so, all true. But would you not agree that it is important to have them both pointing straight ahead at the same time? I think you would.
Note to all: this discussion could almost ONLY come from a ZRXer because the rear wheel IS offset about an inch from the front. (this is only on the 1200 right, pilot? I think the 1100's are lines up are they not? Or do I have it backwards....?)
Didn't you used to have a ZRX Vincent?
Doug
I know for sure the zrx12 has an offset rear wheel, but a lot of other bikes do too.
Some people will string line the rear to the front and make the center lines the same, but without knowing the offset, if there is one, your cocking the rear wheel. It is absolutely pointless to string line the wheels. The rear wheel needs to be square with the pivot axel, period. You do this and the bike will push straight. you can check the front wheel after the rear is square, and only if you know of the offset, if it has one. Lets just say there is none. you square the rear, check the front and if it's off, the only way to true it is to cut the neck and reweld it straight.
You can cock a rear wheel all the way to the right and when you ride it both wheels will be pointing straight, no matter where the rear wheel is pointing the front will always follow, however, the bike will be crab walking down the road, but they both will be pointing forward.
The rear wheel needs to be square with the pivot axel, this will insure the bike will be tracking straight. Thats it, there is no steering alignment on a motorcycle.
It really is that simple, put the rear square, no need to check with the front unless you plan on cutting the neck.
Thrust angle ! The rear has to be straight with centerline. Period.

my bike is running stock wheels although they are from another 12 (Black Wheels on a 2000),, i have a NEW 17 Vortex up front and i put a NEW Stealth 45 tooth on rear,, that being said i have 2 different brand sprockets that are both new as is the chain (EK DVX2)
so i should be in good shape once i use the alignment tool correct?
