"If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It"
Well it happened took my 2000 to Lee's Cycle in San Diego based on many fine recommendations to have the 7500 mile valve adjustment done.
My bike has been running perfectly but wanted to cover my ass and make sure all the scheduled maintance was done just in case I have a warranty claim some day.
Picked up the bike today and on the way home traveling the same road I have been on a milion times I look at the gauges and wouldn't you know it the temp. needle is at 9:00 and I'm doing 70 down the freeway?
Never have I had this happen always at the 8:00 most of the time unless she's really getting pushed through the mountains.
Well I get home call Lee's and ask if they had removed any of the coolant hoses during maintance, find out they had and Hugo(the service manager) suggest that I make sure the radiator is full and the coolant recovery tank is full.
I check and find both quite low, so I fill the radiator to the neck with the coolant mix, and also the recovery tank making sure to release any BUBBLES in the system which there where many of.
Fire up the beast all is well till she comes up to temp. what happens now is the temp gauge gets to 10:00 the fan comes on and then turns off before it cools down?
Lee's will happily make sure they take care of this issue but I really would like to fix it myself but have run out of ideas, well almost, I should say I'm thinking they may have connected a wire incorrectly. HELP!

If a wire was *disconnect* your fan probably wouldnt work.
As for the temp guage showing 9 o'clock, thats normal. The fan is going to kick on automatically at the 11 o'clock position, but the temp guage isnt going to show how much it cooled down. The fan is only a "temporary" solution to keep the engine cool. Nothing cools better than riding it. (more air passes over more sq inches)
Couple of items you failed to mention. Do you have the Muzzy fan blade?
What kind of coolant mixture are you using? 50/50? 60/40? 70/30? Any additives?
From what you've posted, everything seems normal.

Stock fan blade.
50/50 coolant no additives.
I guess my concern is prior to all this the gauge would stay at 8 o'clock most of the time now its hitting 9 o'clock?

Mine is never at 8 o'clock. It's either at 9 while I am riding or the fan is on.

Well, since Im in humid ass Florida I run a 70% distilled water and 30% coolant mix. Never had the indicator past 11 o'clock. My bike used to run hot. The factory mix is too rich with coolant imho. You can try switching to a lean coolant mix(more water).
The metal fan blade is kind of cheap insurance with a header. The header sheds enough heat to melt it. Seen it on more than one occassion on different brands of motorcycles too.
Anyway the 9 o'clock position is normal.

TB now that I know 9 is normal I feel better, sure is strange though that proir to the valve adjustment it was running at 8?
Anyway took it for a run this a.m. and 9 is where she stays.
Sure can feel the difference on my legs, the heat from the engine is more noticeable.

When riding, my needle is usually at the 9 o'clock position, unless it is <70 deg F outside and then it will be at the 8 o'clock position.

I know Hugo very well & he is usually excellent! This isn't your problem!!! Take it BACK!!! I know riders with 70,000+ miles on the 12 & have never needed V adjustment.

When I am riding mine down the highway, my temp gauge runs one notch under half. It doesn't seem to matter what the outside temp is. When I ride in town it usually runs half or one notch above, but not higher, unless traffic is really thick.

Update on the temp gauge Its all back to normal runs one notch under half most of the time.
Must of had a good amount of air in the system.
