Integrator in CA - Legal?
Hey Kids,
I just got my ZX12R a couple of weeks ago, and now I got the itch to make her look prettier. Sorry if this topic has been played out, but I did a search and didn't find it. I want to get rid of the rear signal lights and install an integrator into the brake lights. I just ordered an FSD undertail, and it would be an shame to mess up the lines with turn signals.
The only question I have is does anyone know whether or not integrators are actually legal in California? I don't want to give the cops any more excuses to pull me over.

I don't live in CAlifornia. But I have the undertail with an integrator. I have been pulled over in California, Washington and Oregon. My blinkers have never been the issue.

technically, and by the letter of the law, yes, it is illegal...anything modified beyond oem stock could be deemed illegal per strict vehicle code language...it depends on how hard-up the cop is about writing an equipment coupon...it does give the savvy cop PC to stop you, though...so use at your own risk...most cops don't sweat it

it's definitely illegal in BC, but the law in general is more lax up here. i'v never got a straight answer from anyone in authority, but the general consensus is u need an amber turn signal (which doesnt make sense since some buicks dont have em).
my concern about integrators has been visibility tho. i'm concerned that it's too hard to tell if the turn signal is on or not. not that i'm one to talk havin ridin aroudn with NO signals for something like a year. how u find urs works Z? did u put a separator between the 2 bulbs to try and increase the light separation?

My FSD undertail makes the stock tail light look like two independent lights. So the seperation is pretty obvious. Most of my riding buddies have the integrator also and it is prety obvious to me.
I ran a red light of all things (really was an accident) about three months ago. The police officer that pulled me over drooled all over my 12 and was especially intrigued by my undertail and tail lights. I demonstrated them to him and he made a comment on how thin my motorcycle looked and how much better looking bikes are getting etc. etc. Still wrote me a ticket! He was going to give me a setbelt ticket instead of the red light so that it wouldn't be a moving violation. But he thought about it and thought he might get in trouble writing a seatbelt ticket to a motorcycle guy!!

I like the MotoGraphix undertail. The signals are further apart, & are the new bright LED's. If I got one, I'd just add two to the "line" to make them arrows. We all know cagers will get confused by two close "brake lights" as in the FSD undertail...

Thanks for all the replies. I figured that I would be able to get a ticket for just about any non OEM mods on the bike if someone wanted to get anal on me. I think I'll just stick to the original plan of hookin up the integrator. If I get a ticket, I'll change it. I have the FSD undertail on order as well as the LF clear tailight assy. I was gonna see what I could do about shoving some amber bulbs in there as well in lieu of the integrator. I'll have to just see what I feel like doing once I get the parts together.
But, one thing that I do like that will most likely end up on my bike is the turn signals in the corner of the headlights that someone posted on another thread. They're wicked lookin.

In the interest of safety and conspicuity whilst amongst the other motorists of diminished sight, safe vehicle operation, and common road courtesy, I will continue to utilize my OEM sigs until I find suitable replacements (Dino's front sig mod is a start) that are both conspicous and styilsh to my taste...not that anyone here gives a rat's ass what I think today 
...just hope the cop who stops you isn't a dick about it...we can only hope, eh?

What happened to just good old fashoned hand signals like the Harley boys use while their turn signals are getting chromed?

I use them more than my regular turn signals for lane changes and merging onto the freeway.

Yeah I know; I just got into a road rage incident with some idiot the other day & the thread reminded me of it. Hell you live in the Bay ARea, you know how traffic is here. This guy was obivously new in the country, & to summarize it he only know how to fly the middle finger.

It came out in a way that just cracked me up, & I started LMAO immediately. This further crazed him as he dove in front of me; would have ran into me had I not let him in. It was so funny his feeble attempt at cussing me out I actually had a good commute for once. I attribute his actions to wherever he came from...but it was funny...
Hence my statement of "the only hand signals..."
