Front Rotor Bolt Broken - Need Advice
When taking off a front rotor on my zx12r I stripped the head of the bolt. I drilled it out for a #3 screw extractor and broke the screw extractor off in the bolt. I used a tungsten carbide cutter on a dremel tool and was able to cut away the piece of extractor.
Decided to go to a #4 screw extractor. The drill size is 1/4 inch, which is very close to the size of the bolt minus the threads. Unfortunately, my hole wasn't straight and I caught the threads in the wheel with the 1/4 inch drill bit.
So my questions.........
Should I take the wheel to a machine shop and have a heli coil insert put in, or buy a new wheel?
Does anyone have experience with a heli coil in a wheel? Cost? Any down sides?
Does anyone have a straight front wheel for sale for an 02 ZX12R?

For one rotor bolt I don't think a hel-coil will be a problem. They aren't torqued very high, and you will be using loctite anyway. I do drag and lsr racing as a hobby, and a heli-coil would be sufficient for me. Just my .02.

Thanks fellas. I guess I'll call a machine shop today.
btw I forgot to mention I need a rotor bolt too.
I'll send $5 for a clean undamaged rotor bolt.

Next time heat the bolts up with a small torch, heat gun...If not then loosenbolt a little then tighten then loosen a little more and keep doing it that way until its out...Takes time that way but at least you wont break or strip the bolts

Get a time-sert installed. Much better than a helicoil.

Stuart Racing - I'll let you know in a few days about the blue 02 wheel. Just in case I do need it, how much are you asking?
I found a local shop that said they could burn out the bolt with an EDM machine. I love science. He said if the threads in the wheel were damaged then I could go with an insert with no problem. We'll see.

I had a local shop use an EDM machine to burn out the old bolt. The threads in the bolt hole were slightly buggered at the very top, but the bolt still grabs 90% of good solid threads.
Now to finish my polishing project.
