Bearing Question??

can the backyard mechanic change out wheels bearings with basic tools,, or do i need to take the wheels to a shop and have them pressed in etc. these guys are crazy now of days wanting $100.00 an hour in labor,, so i would be looking at anywhere from $80-$120 bucks and thats ONE wheel,, i am mechanically inclined and do most all of my work,, but dont have a press etc,, can i do it? and if so,, any tips or tricks to get them out or in??

Yes, just use hammer and a punch. Taking out - You dont have to worry about the bearing but when Your putting it in don't hit the inner circle. I usuallu use the old bearing as a help what I'm hitting. Or something else that is close to the outer diameter. The important thing is trying to keep the bearing straight when pushing or pulling it.

Put the new bearings in the Freezer overnite, then follow tuusinii's advise when installing.

You can also put wheel in front of space heater to warm it up before installation.

Heat and shrink method
Freeze the bearing overnight
and
Heat the wheel housing with a light bulb for an hour

then remove frozen bearing and tap in with a old bearing or a socket the OD of the bearing.

You might want the wheel a little warmer than that (light bulb) to make sure the bearing doesn't stick.
Use a heat gun if you can get one..

anyone know the inside diameter (exact) of the bearings,, they have a tool kit w/ 7 adapters or another that has 2 for cheaper,, if the one w/ 2 has the right size thats what i will get..
or i will beat them out LOL
