painting clutch/stator cover
anybody here try this themselves? mine had a slight bit of rash from the PO and i was thinking of going black to match the motor. whats is a good paint for this?(rattle can style)
i started sanding the clutch cover tonight to take a break from polishing the subframe, and holy hell its a rough surface! its going to take a lot of work to get it smooth. im using 100 grit right now(started with 180 and quicky realised it wasnt enough) and once i get it close, ill work my way up progressively to 400 then spray it.
im trying to get rid of all the gold on my bike. i want just blue, black, and polished aluminum. are the brake calipers this rough under the gold (paint?) they would look good polished, but i cant see me cleaning them every day so i think they will get the black treatment too.

I'ver painted the left side gold cover couple of times after first year bike falling over itt side stand. I just sanded the cover while on bike and bought a can of spary from local paintshop. The paint stays on usually 2-3 years. The match wasn't perfect, but because there isin't anything on the same color near it dosen't matter. And If Your just painting it black - no problem. Maybe some hight temp paint would be stickier...

You may want to take into consideration the high heat levels of the engine. I wouldn't trust regular automotive paint. Perhaps black caliper paint would last longest and resist heat best?
I painted my original magnesium stator cover black, it looked great. That cover has since been forcefully replaced by a new stator cover. No more stoppies for me. =(

VHT Caliper paint is Seriously Good! I used it for the Wheels and not even easy to scratch either! AutoZone

PJ1 Fast Black Satin Black, high heat. I am building a 1375 stroker for a customer and painted all the gold covers with this particular paint. I have used it for years. Top quality and long lasting, maintains its sheen and is easy to clean. You won't be disappointed.

Maybe Black Chrome or Anodized? Might look good and a little less to maintain?

I had the factory color spectro-analyzed at my local auto paint supply house a few years ago. There is a PPG color called Cinnamon something that is close and they blended from there for a perfect match.
You will be fine with a normal auto paint on the case covers - they don't get hot enough to cause a problem with it, but I seem to scratch my case covers up on and endless basis and am going with the VHT Vince specified for 1) black 2) the extra toughness of the VHT compound 3) ease of respraying them.
I was thinking about having them powder coated but easy repairs (and not having to take them off for a minor touch-up) nixed that idea.

IMHO - the factory paint on the case covers is tough stuff and probably the best primer undercoat you'll find.
Sand only where you have damage/repair, etch prime and spray on your color coat. ;-)

it was really rough. looked like they took the casting and sprayed it. with no prep. but that could just be me.
i want it smooth before i paint it
ill see what a scotch bright pad does to the stator cover when i get to it

+1. (unless it is flaking or chipping).........I use an epoxy primer/ sealer (direct to metal) after sanding that works great, good and strong to.

You got to be kidding right? Automotive paint is the most durable ever! If you want super strong look to the fleet industry. I use PPG's delfleet evolution on frames, engine cases, cylinders, ect. It is 72% solid content and like liquid powder coat. THE strongest out there period!!!! You will need a 1.5mm- 1.8mm setup in your gun to spray it. I did a "paint-off" against Dupont's imron for a large client that was getting pressure to switch. I stomped it into the ground in every aspect of paint. I use automotive paint on case covers, wheels, swingarms, forks. I am quite into paint, I was a automotive painter for 22 years and now am a technical rep/ feild instructor for PPG industries. Bottom line ANYTHING you will get in a spray can is not going to be the quality that a "mixed" chemical fully atomized will be. You will need to understand the composition of a spray can and how it works to fully understand. Dont get me wrong i use them too. Only a select few and only in certain situations.
