Pc3r issues (again)

I recently had my PC3R replaced once under warranty, the original one died after having weird problems like corrupted map data, inability to connect on a consistant basis and finally the bike wouldn't start with it connected. Well now I can't connect to it (the new replacement PC3R) again, although the bike is running fine. Is anyone else having these symptoms?

Last time I programmed it, I could not establish a connection with the key in the on position, the bike had to actually be running to get a connection with the laptop and upload or download a map. This was about a month ago, and it had been running fine since.

Today, I went to modify the map for nitrous (pull back out the 5 degrees advance timing and add some fuel up top) but I can't even get a connection to the PC3R. I've tried two laptops, two serial cables, reinstalled the latest version of the software that I downloaded off the web, tried it with the key on, tried it with bike on, every comport setting possible, nothing. A test light indicated it is getting power and the LEDs do their dance when the ignition is first turned on, however one thing I noticed is that when I rev the bike the LEDs dont move up or down they are just in the lowest/lean position? I thought I remembered them fluctuating when revving the bike before? Maybe another symptom of a bad unit?

I'm almost scared (ops! did I say skeeered! dontbescared ) to spray it without adding more fuel to the map. Schnitz dry kit #34 jet (40hp) on Muzzys/JE pistons.

So after giving up on using the laptop I tried adjusting the high fuel bar up to the highest setting on the faceplate manually by holding down the three buttons while turning the key on then pressing the high button and moving the bars up. That appears to have worked because when I repeat the procedure I can see the high bar is now up where I left it, but now I'm wondering if the box is even doing anything at all?

Last time my PC3R went bad the bike wouldn't start at all when it was connected. This one it runs but wont connect and I'm not sure if it's doing anything?

What do you think? Send it back again for replacement? My real question is should I Spray it anyway? Will the ECM be able to compensate for enough fuel if the PC3R isn't working on a 40-shot dry kit

I run 2 stages with #36 jets and no pc3 or timing retard.I did do the old trick before the pc3s came out to put a resister in the water temp sensor. The only problem we've had with the motor was when the valve spit a shim out on a 8.95 run @162mph and the shifter missed a shift.

RAC4IT,

All these on going issues with the PCIII are the reason I don't have one yet. I am seriously leaning towards the Yosh box. I haven't heard of any reported problems with the Yosh box. I would really like to see the Teka fuel injection mapping device...it allows you to change the ECU and remove the mapping device. I believe it is still in the prototype stage. Anyone have any updated info on the Teka?

Cowboy,

What type of mods do you have on your 12 since you don't have the PCIII?

I decided to make a run with a small jet and no PC3R. Worked "okay" but I think if I were able to add more fuel it would pickup more. 188 to 221 still isn't too bad.

All this "Can't lean it out" talk came from...lets see how do I put this. "It can't lean it out" and we have all seen the maps. Every pipe that I have seen on the zx12 has negative spots in the map. My Tsukigi map is almost all negative so maybe it isn't just Muzzy's.

Start your bike and hit the kill switch. If your PC still can't communicate with the PC3r, and you don't have a physical connection issue, I'd get another replacement. I've been down the same road, and understand how frustrating this can be....

Also the LEDs should be in step with your throttle position sensor and should move with the throttle. I have a PCIII and choose to leave it disconnected.

Sorry guys,I responded the other day but must not have hit the submit button.Wiring for the 1st stage of nos is through a rocker switch and then through a WOT microswitch on the throttleboddies. The second stage is through another rocker switch and the through a push button switch.Other mods include 0-8 inch over swingarm,Scotts steering dampner,Marchesini's,M/T tire, and Hindle step pipe.Instead of pc3 I just put a resistor in line with the water temp sensor.Stock timing, stock motor and idles perfect with a slight hesitation when on off on throttle below 5000rpms but i think it is less noticeable that with the stock pipe.

Cowboy,

How do you like the new Hindle? How does it sound compared to a Muzzy or HMF?

Thanks,

Red
