Laying bike down and oil pressure question

After reading kickstartmyheart's post about his engine grenading, I have a question that's been bugging me since I bought my bike ('00 12). When it was two days old (7 miles on the clock), I was getting ready to ride off, and at the last second I wanted to put it on its sidestand, so I could button up my jacket. Well, I forgot the sidestand was up, the bike came crashing down on it's left side, and the engine revved as I tried to keep it up. The engine shut off automatically. I picked it up, and it started fine, but the oil light was on. I shut it down after 4 seconds or so, then restarted it again, and the oil light was on again. After 3-4 seconds I shut it down. On the third restart, I blipped it twice, and the light went out. Bike seemed fine afterwards.

So my concern is, is there any permanent damage to my 12 motor? It's got 4300 miles, runs great, never runs hot, gets around 40 mpg, I don't race it or do wheelies, and the oil wasn't too dark at the 600 mile oil change. I'm scared that my motor will lock up at highway speeds now...

If it's held together this long, I doubt any real damage had occured. When bearings lose oil long enough, the film is lost and wear begins to occur. Usually if the wear is significant, a loss of oil pressure will occur and failure is pretty close. I've had the oil pump pickup on my bracket car fall off inside the pan while making a pass and absolutely no bearings were hurt at all. It probably came off on the return road but it's still a pretty good clip back to the pits with zero oil pressure. Perhaps an oil pressure gauge would be a nice addition on our bikes. At least it could give you some warning in advance.

Re: damage

My guess is you're OK because of the mileage you've put on. I'm sure that you've wound 'er up a few times since then and obviously it's held up well. -ZXtra

Well I feel a little better with the reassurances! I guess I'll just change the oil/filter more often, and be ready to pull the clutch in at a moment's notice. I've been guilty of winding her up to redline a few times, and she seems to be smoother as the RPMs rise! From 7,000 to redline, it's just raw power, no buzzing or anything. I guess it's a wait and see game now...

Too many toys?! I'm just getting started! :P

Actually, my collection, at least for a while, will probably end with the addition of the Boss Hoss. At about 6 vehicles, the upkeep, costs, and finding time to run them becomes a pain in the a$$. Also, I'm running out of storage room for everything. I'll probably end up keeping all these vehicles for a long time, since each is a little unique in it's own way. I consider these 'toys' as one of my only 'escapes' from the relentless daily grind of work and study. Gives me something to look forward to on weekends. I'll probably have the Boss in about two to three months, if everything goes as planned.

Oh yah, if you haven't guessed, I love hotrodding!
