Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.
I've got a line on a great deal on a Sportsman 500 H.O. and was wondering if any of you guys own one, or have any knowledge of them? I've read good things about them, but realize it isn't the at the top of the heap as far a ATVs go, but it should be a damned nice "do it all" rig.
Any input would be appreciated.

Yep....
It's an automatic, most all of your highend utility style 4wd Atvs are autos now. My only other choice is a 660 Grizzly which is an awesome machine, an automatic as well, but the price I've got a line on for this Polaris is WAY below what I had planned to spend. I don't mind the gas guzzling, I'm more concerned with reliability and how rugged they are. I'm leaving work in a few minutes to go pick one up for my buddy and haul it to his house. I'm gonna take it for a test spin this afternoon.
I've already rode the big Kawasaki Twin and was impressed by it, so now I'll see what this Polaris is all about.

Lots of Polaris ATV's up here in snowmobile country. Lotta buds have 'em. Auto is good but on most there is no engine braking, remember that coasting down a steep incline. The 2 strokes start easily in the sub zero temps and use very little 2 stroke oil(sleds gulp it). One thing about the Polaris is if ya do any really deep water stuff for an extended period the belt can get wet and slip, be careful not to burn it(the belt) up. Front CV boots can be vulnerable depending on the model.
I like the Kawa 650 twin.

Scooter,
The 500 H.O. has the engine braking and it appears to work really well. I rode a demo model today, and also took my buddy's for a ride. He just bought it today and I had to haul it home for him. I was really impressed with the ride over harsh stuff and it really climbs hills nicely, even in 2wd. In low range it will really chug up a hill. I'm pretty impressed by it and am more than likely purchase one tomorrow.

Go for it. All the guys up here rave about how smooth the ride is compared to anything else.

My neighbor has a couple Polaris 500's. Pretty nice but he has had some problems with them. If the deal is good enough, buy it. If not, you can't beat the Kawi right now.
