Hi Sherman, was interested in your thoughts on how your rear suspension improved after recharging the nitrogen. I went back to re-read the posts about it but didn't find a follow up to the work. Is it much better?

I have 17,500 on my 12 now and the rear is starting to feel a little "bouncy" maybe that's nit the right word I'm looking for but this morning I remembered your posts about the nitrogen and I'm thinkin' maybe I'm due.

Can you please tell me what's involved with removing the chamber to take it in to have it charged? Also, can you explain a bit more about drilling the hole to get the cap off with a screwdriver? Thanks for you help.

OK I answered by own question about the canister, you have to remove the whole shock eh? Now the question is how do support the rear of the bike without loading the suspension. How did you support the bike red? Obviously the rear stand I have won't work.

You asked!

Can we say... "jack stands"?

(note shock sitting in the tail section)

Since I was changing the springs out in my forks at the same time, I had very few options in my humble lil' garage. Notice I used FOUR jackstands. I'm sure there are a varity of other and easier methods, but this is what worked for me.

As for the "improvement" after getting it recharged? Can we say... "OH MY GAWD (it's in the details)!" Though the new (and heavier) forks springs made telling the differnce a tad tougher, it was unquestionable that recharging the shock made an almost scary and huge difference.

I think the OEM spec is around 140 PSI. I had less then 60 PSI. After filling out a RaceTech survey, I ended up putting 200 psi in. Like I said, it's kinda erie on how the bike has change.

AGAIN, an IMPORTANT REMINDER...

Make sure that who ever is going to recharge your shock has a "nitrogen needle" because the standard "tire valve" attachment will NOT work. They can get the needle from Motion Pro for less the $30.

Jack stands, good idea my friend, I have four of them myself so that is what I shall use. I will call the dealership today to ask about the needle to make sure they can do it, if not I'll call a couple others to see. Now I weigh 220 should I also have em' fill it to 200lbs? Also, any tips on getting the shock out or is it as straightforward as it seems?

Shocking suggestions

I'd suggest you go to RaceTech's site and fill out the rider survey.

I'd also suggest that you consider doing something with the forks as well, if you haven't already.

Being the poorest guy on this forum, I couldn't afford to send mine off, but for about $100, I got the heavier springs and a bottle of 5 wt. fork oil. The OEM spec is 10 wt., but RaceTech's suggested the lighter oil WHEN using THEIR valving (which I am not... again, $$$).

Changing the springs and oil in the forks is actually more of a hassle then removing rear shock. Your correct, the shock is fairly easy to unbolt. For me, I found it easier to just remove the tire. I guess you could still do it with the tire on, but why hassle with it? Kinda like leaving the radiator on while putting a new header on.

I just removed the bottom bolt and unbolted the top bracket from the frame. The bracket bolt is located under the tank and also has a cotter pin (under the rubber cap). I just didn't want to hassle with trying to unbolt the shock from the top bracket. One bolt on bottome, one on top and out it comes.
