Thanks TedG re: front wheel removal....

Was trying to remove the front wheel... scrambling to find a 22mm hex driver... then I remebered yer post about the spark-plug driver.... well fuck me if you weren't right! ... flip that plug socket backwards, stick an extension in it and there's yer 22mm driver... front wheel came off no prob...

PS ... torque is 94ft/lbs fer re-install if anyone here keeps score and actually torques things to the correct spec...

I hope everyone here reads this and realizes that they can use a sparkplug socket to undo the front wheel... this is an important trick and could help you if you got stuck in the middle of nowhere

Are you talking about the sparkplug tool that came in the toolkit? If so, I'm screwed since the shop that did my first maintenance stole my tool. Shoulda known when they asked if my kit had one... Oh well.

What that trick won't work for is taking the swingarm off. That's a lil bit trickier! But then again, taking the swingarm off is not something you'd want to do often...

no.. I'm talking about a spark plug socket from a socket set... if you flip it backwards you'll see that there's a 22mm hex built into the thing.. .shove an extension through the side where you'd normally put the spark plug and you have an instant 22mm hex driver.

For those of you that dont have this tool lying around, Sears has the 13/16 sparkplug socket for $3.99 and the extension runs about the same $$. You can use the sparkplug isulator to secure the extension in the socket.
The swingarm issue requires a 14mm hex. Ive used AutoZone hex attachments for this with good luck. The set runs about $8. They work well enough to get away with. Snapon wanted $40 each!!

Can you torque the swingarm w/the spark plug socket?

I know, I know, use the right tool.... but why can't you use the spark plug socket for the swingarm? I think it is 94 ft/lbs. Too much torque, not enough hex on the end? Rather not spendthe money if'n I don't have to.

Here's a tip that might help those of you with the swing arm woe's. Go to the local hardware store and get a deep 9/16" nut like you use to thread two pieces of all thread together. Less than 50 cents. Stick it in the cup covering the swingarm shaft and then you can put a socket or wrench on the end of the nut to remove the cup. After you remove the cup, you can use the spark plug trick to remove the shaft.

Thanks xs!

I actually have 4 spark plug sockets, and ALL of them are 19mm, not the 22mm version. So, before I flag down a Snap-on truck tomorrow, I am going to try Lowes and Sears and see if there's a 22mm spark plug socket, and try and save about $20.

I was hoping you would confirm that it's OK to use the inverted plug socket on the swing arm. Good idea on the 9/16" nut. Actually, the 22mm is equivalent to a 7/8" SAE, but the high torque requirements prolly won't allow you to use that technique on the swingarm axle.

Sounds like the plug socket idea is OK?

7/8" is a bit too big, but you can file it a little. The spark plug I know that works as a 22mm is a Craftsman.

If you have a friend that works at a steel mill you can get all kinds of custom tools in the mail. Lucky for me I do.

The Spark plug socket I used is a craftsman. It is the one that fits standard 11/16" spark plugs. Like lawnmomer plugs. Seems to fit in the front axle and swingarm shaft just fine. I removed and installed my swingarm using this method just last week to polish it. Put my torque wrench with another socket on the end to torque it back down. Worked perfect.

Sorry, scratch that part. Didn't need another socket on the torque wrench. Extension is what I meant.

You should be able to litterally put your extension in the oposite end of the spark plug socket and use a ratchet.

You can also go down and buy a 22 mm allen wrench for about 5 to 10 bucks depending where you go. Then cut a piece of it off, throw it you tool box and use it with a wrentch or socket.

Yeah, I love youse guys!

I dropped by Lowes this morning, and now I have yet ANOTHER spark plug socket, but this one is really 22mm, and it's a PERFECT fit!

Great advice. The hex side is really beefy, unlike the old ones I have. It will work out just fine.

I appreciate the advice. That is why I love this board.
