Checking Oil Level ??????
Any ideas or does everyone have stands? Hard to see sight glass and hold bike at the same time... Suggestions?
Don't mind getting stands but somebody tell me where.....

Me i strap the bike on the trailer put the level
on the side of the rear tire, cant be more strait
than that!At 2.8 liter the glass was only fill
at 1/3 !!!So to the top mark your way to mutch!

I have a "calibrated" piece of wood that I put under the kickstand that keeps the bike vertical. Of course, you need to keep pressure against the bike in the direction of the kickstand but it's handy for a quick level check.

I just sit on the bike holding it level and use a telescoping mirror.

I use the Pit Bull stand, and I can't say enough about how great it is.
But, to do it without a stand isn't that hard (just kinda scary). Hold the right grip and squeeze the front brake. crouch down where you can see the glass as you pull the bike upright. The way you tell the bike is level is where it takes the least force to hold it upright.
After you've checked it, make sure to give a little backwards pull when setting it down on the stand to make 100% certain the stand will not fold up on you.

the trailer trick is good, but be careful NOT to pull the forks down too much as the level will rise in the glass giving a reading which says you have more in the bike than you really do.
Normally, I sit on the ground on the side next to the sight glass and gently tug on the r bar pulling the bike carefully upright, just to the balance point. easy does it and its safe; done it many, many times and it hasn't fallen on me yet. Make sure the bike is in gear and that the stand is fully down...
There have been several engine failures lately from APPARENTLY running with low oil. I keep mine at the 1/2 glass level now!!!

I check it on the stands (front and rear). I'm just a weekend rider so between rides I always get the tires off the ground.  -ZXtra

I either use the rear stand, or have someone else sit on the bike for me.
I've tried the 'calibrated piece of wood' thing, and I've tried the "just grab the right handle & brake lever and bend down while feeling for the bike's 'straight-up-edness'. Didn't like either one personally.
Even on a rear stand, you'll get an accurate reading. If you look close enough, you can see that the oil line is *slightly* higher on the right side of the glass than on the left. It's a minute difference, so ya gotta look close.
I bought a Muzzy stand with his aluminum spools. I love the set up.
Pit Bull stands are top notch, you won't find any better.

As I mentioned I use my wifes hand held mirror while I sit on the bike. I'm sure pitbull is a great product but I can buy a bike jack at Sam's club for less.

I put three quarts in when I change the oil and filter. I so this on my hoist with the front wheel clamped so the bike is vertical and level. Check the oil and note that the oil is in the middle of the window. For GP sakes I have put the bike on my pit bull rear stand so I know where three quarts is on the site glass with the bike on the stand. There isn't much of a change between on the lift or on the stand.
Other then that occasionally I will check it by holding the handle bar and standing the bike up while on a knee looking at the site glass. I have never had to add any oil between changes. I change my oil every 1500 to 2000 miles.

ZHooligan...Pretty much my oil change intervals. I like 3 qts & a splash to bring it to the upper level of the glass..GOZR has a inexpensive solution .

geez, whats with all the fancy methods? i just hunch down at look at the window while holdin the bike vertical. gotta add oil bit by bit & check it every time. kinda inconvenient in a way, but given that i always give the oil time to settle before checking, it works out fine fer me.

I forgot ot add that I always wear a white lab coat when checking my oil to insure the examination is completed correctly.

Just press the buttons in sequence on the dash face and the instrument panel will give you an oil level reading instead of the fuel level.

You want to explain this a bit further. You saying there is a oil level sensor on the bike that you can have displayed on the fuel graph. If so what is the sequence of the buttons.

That was the problem with the early fuel gauges, it was reading the oil level and everyone thought is was the gas. That is why it was so easy for them to fix it at the dealership.
