Charging Problem '00 12!
I have 2k on my green 2000, bougth in P.A last year, for some unknown reson it is not charging, it has been at my local dealer for more than a week and they can not figure out what is wrong, they tell me the have performed all the possible checks on the electrical system described in the manuals but can not find anything wrong, according to the manual the next step it to put in new parts even thoug they can not find anything wrong with them, but here comes the real problem, I moved to Rekjavik Iceland, and this is one of only four zx12 here, so all spare parts need to be specially ordered from overseas and that is going to cost me a lot, and just to find out if something is wrong whith the existing parts, the mechanic tells me that he suspects the regulator to be the fault, but like he tells me he it passt all his checks which he performed according to manual ! If anyone has experianced simular problems I would be very glad to have some comments on what might be wrong be for I start ordering expensive new parts becuase warranty does not cover bikes in europe bougth in the U.S.
thanks,
Oli Thor Olafsson

Oli, Wish I could offer some help to you on this one, but I haven't had or heard of any problems with the charging system on the ZX-12R. Well actually someone did have some stator problems a while back.

Sorry to hear about your issue
I think it was Otis that had an electrical/Charging issue with his 2000 ZX12R.
I think that he only checks the board Mon-Fri.... I would check with him and maybe he can give some insight into your issue!!! Worth a shot before you spend all that $$$$!

I had the problem with the charging system on the 2000. Here is the deal: the stator shorted out where the wires fold over, between the case and the stator. The reason the mechanic cannot find the problem is when you check the stator wires with an ohm meter they seem to check out and have approx 5 ohms between any of the yellow wires. Because they have partially cooked themselves together. Here is the trick, charge the battery and start the bike, between any two of the yellow wires there should be approx. 85 VAC at 4000 rpm. Yes I said AC. I'll bet there is no voltage there. You check it where it connects under the passenger seat on the left side. I repaired mine temporarally until I got a new one by removing the stator, cleaning up the wires and using cut up crimp on connectors and shrink tubing. You cannot use solder as it will melt. It doesn't matter which yellow wires go to which. My dealer understands that I know more about electronics and mechanics than all his mechanics put together and allows me to do my own warranty work. Actually I trusted my repair better than the new stator because I did a much better job of insulating.
Hope this helps.

hope your problem is solved.

After reading Ted's description on how to fix it, you would think that there would have been a recall for it from Kawasaki to make note of the possible problem.

I'm wondering how many 12s really have this problem?? It doesn't seem very common.

To put it in layman's terms "Jiggy" simply means being well versed or very good at something. It also has other meanings which are deduced through context!?!?

Angie is right, I had the same problem and it turned out my stator was TOAST! I mean toast, all burned up. Have them pull the stator cover off and you will be able to tell within 2 seconds just by looking at it. I put another stator in and it fixed the problem.

Idiots !
O.k. here´s the deal, after three weeks at the shop, and a new 250$ regulator and still nothing is happening, some "Einstein" try´s to put in a new battery !
To make a long story short, the bike was fine the whole time, but the battery was totaled. and on top of things they wanted my to pay over 400 $ for time spent on finding what was wrong !!!! unfortunately this is the only Kawasaki dealer in the country, so from now on I will be doing my own service on the bike, just need to order a mechanics manual, does anyone know where I can get one ?

Well they gave me a long story about how they did everything right, including charging the battery but for some reson the battery wasn´t letting any voltage getting throug when installed ! I am no expert on electrical systems, but in my simple way of thinking I proabably would have tried to change the battery in the early stages of repearment, like I told them when I took the bike to the shop, "either the battery is totaled, or bike is not charging" After three weeks on the charging system I guess they opted to check the battery ! Thanks for all your inputs,
greetings from Iceland
