Tim,

Good tip on the exh tolerance. I was under the impression that .080" was min for exh.

They all happened at NEAR the same crank angle. I measured at 2.5degree increments and it was clear that the real min was near but not exactly on the same place because at 2.5 before and 2.5 after it wasn't always symmetrical.

Here is a symmetrical one
bTDC_10.0 na
5.0 na
TDC__00.0 0.062
2.5 0.053
5.0 0.045
7.5 0.042
10.0 0.040 = min int VTP; #1 quench = .035", Int cam CL =103
12.5 0.042
15.0 0.047

here is an asymmetrical one
bTDC_10.0 na
5.0 na
TDC_0.072
2.5 0.063
5.0 0.055
7.5 0.051
10.0 0.050 = min int VTP; #1 quench = .035", Int cam CL =105
12.5 0.052
15.0 0.057

However, the VTP readings are probably +/- .001" also, so i didn't get too worried about it.

But, I was absolutely amazed at how consistent my reverse engineered version of the "TimChin patented VTP tool" (aka Tim's 14" tool) was.

That tool + having the ends of the cams turned down to .750, makes VTP determination really satisfying.

Gary,
I am behind schedule on this build by a week due to a lil glitch, but still might go to Andy's this weekend.

Or more likely, i might do some honey-do's. I'm driving to New England next week, taking my daughter back to school, so better treat wifey nice before I go

Piston pic?: here's one... (barbies were attending an NA meeting)

I have a 14" tool? That really flies in the face of traditional racial profiles, eh?

BTW, your natural-light still photos are fabulous!

Very lovely piston!

New England, thats a bit of a drive. Becareful and have fun!

My bro and I might make a run to Indiana in a couple of weekends as well, as he has been eyeing a hairdryer bike out that way.

There always seem to be little glitches no matter how careful you plan. Hope yours come
out smooth and easy.

I don't know what he is looking at just yet, but he just asked me if I would help with driving
to Indiana one weekend in two or three weeks as he was looking at a bike in those
parts. If it is a motorhead turbo it will probably come part in a ziplock sandwich bag and
the other part in a used Doritos bag. Just kidding...................................................but not really.

Question entropy; will you be doing anything with your piston tops?
You have alot of sharp edges for that high of compression. I widdled mine down to help reduce "Hot" spots.
Also, will you be thightening up your quench?

Same question here! The looks like a VERY Sharp edge in the Middle of the combustion Chamber. You may want to use a Rubber abrasive wheel very lightly and polish the edges specially the on in the center.

I was really looking at the HIGH Compression and realized that you are not using any NOS

the edges are not all that sharp, but point well taken. Too late this build anyway, i bolted the head on this morning.

psycho,
my min quench is as tight as i can get it with this combo.
#1- .035; #2-.032; #3=.033; #4=.036

I'd like all 4 cyl to be at .030, but lil differences in rod length and crank throw unfortunately give a spread from .032 to .036. My thinnest base sim is .005, so going to the next tighter quench puts #2 at .027". I don't want to go that tight. Could have had the block ground .002, but didn't want to do it this time around. I have had enough block issues as it is...

I can understand your concern with your stroke.

I run my 1270 at .027 quench. (no base gasket)

I massage them a little more than that. It's kind of a ritual for me. Putting my "touch" on the parts and all. But that's just me. It's a Doug thing.
Oh yeah, and let's see more of The Barbies......

...Is Doug admitting to massaging the Garage Barbies, putting his touch on their parts and all?! (Note that I've ALT+PRT SC'd this page and saved it as a JPG in offsite storage, just in case Doug decides to edit his post again.)

Yep, i'm sick, but it's good to know that I'm not alone!

I had the head off since degree-ing the cams last Sun, so I re-checked/tweaked CL's this am, and the GB's were right there lending a hand

Irene-Barbie wants to show you how easy it is to get good dial indicator reading with the end of the intake cam machined down and the cam cap trimmed back

Barbie # 2 points out the same machining/trimming on the exhaust cam

Barbies back at home.

Ah yes, the pistons!

Personally, I like the up-skirt of the Dial Indicator Extension Brace Barbie in that same photo. Makes cam timing a little more participatory, I would think.

Machining down the ends of the cams and trimming back the cam cap makes setting CL's and VTP measurement WAY easier / reproducible.

There has to be a down side waiting to bite me in the ass; too good to be true.
